You are 10 feet from a wall and moving closer to it. If each movement toward the wall is 1/2 the distance of the preceding movement, how long will it take to arrive at the wall?
This typically has a stipulation that each movement is half the distance to the wall, but as stated, this case simply states that each movement is half the distance of the previous movement, with no restrictions on the initial movement. Therefore, if I move (or attempt to) 12 feet as my initial movement, I will arrive at the wall before the end of my first movement, smashing my nose in the process.

OK, here's my stupid question:

Were the USA and USSR really on the brink of nuclear war during the Cuban missile crisis?

Everyone says that they were, but whenever I try to think it through, I just can't get there. Suppose Kennedy doesn't withdraw the naval blockade. A Soviet ship charges straight into it. Two ships collide. One of the captains loses their cool and starts shooting. There's a naval battle and some ships are sunk. I still don't see either Kennedy or Krushchev deciding to escalate to launching nukes. Am I wrong?
Didn’t Cuba begin fueling their (liquid fueled) rockets when the blockade was imposed? IIRC the USSR fueling their rockets was always taken seriously as a sign they were preparing to launch.

What is the difference between tray and platter?

I kind of thought that a platter is rectangular while a tray is circular.

Alas, not so. TV trays, back in the day, were rectangular and often had legs. Tea trays could be rectangular or oval. Some serving platters are oval. So I don't think that's the difference.

See how I didn't manage to answer @48thStreetCustom 's question at all, but I did just tell you how wrong you are? Glad I could help.

That could be another thread: How wrong am I?
