Because the ship has a fleet, and the fleet has air cover, and the air cover has a base that has to be attacked or defended...and both sides were committed to a policy of never surrender. That means that whoever thinks he's losing might go nuclear. Oh, it wasnt inevitable...obviously. But it was a real possibility.
I was in 8th grade. The day the Sov ships were due to hit the blockade line, our principal told us to all stay home from school...in the basement. We believed him because we'd lived with the real threat since birth. Nukes were USED a few years before I was born, and we all accepted that wars do blow up whole countries. Much of the world was still digging out of the rubble when we were kids.
