Noble Amps Preamp

Those mini power amps do look cool. I run my Noble into a GK MB 800. It's a super powerful and small head. It can be used as a power amp by going in the effects return but I usually go in the input. This gives the FOH my signal from the Noble and I get that signal in my IEM's as well. I can then use the GK front-end to tune my cab to the room. Works like a charm and sounds great!

Makes sense. Do you also use the EQ on the Noble? I go into the input of my Markbass combo, but was thinking about getting a standalone power amp which would give me another complete amp rig when paired with the Noble.

I do the same with a Genzler Magellan 800 - also a great combination! Our sound tech loves what he's getting from the Noble, and what he's hearing from the Magellan/Baer ML-112 combination.

Any thoughts on how the Noble would sound going into a Monique?

I have a DeMonique, which is a Monique with a built in Minnie. There's no effects loop, so I can't just isolate the Minnie. Gassing for one but not sure if it would be redundant.

How does the Noble pre react to phantom power? Just curious.

Hi @AMJBASS - It is not affected by phantom power.

The XLR output is fed by a Jensen DI transformer, same as a Radial JDI. The transformer isolates the active circuitry from the phantom power. Although even if that were not the case, the voltages inside the Noble preamp are much higher than phantom power (350V vs 48V), so it's really more like the Jensen transformer is protecting the soundboard from the Noble. ;)

Brilliant!

Trying out the noble with a Demeter Minnie 800D class D power amp. This is a nice setup! The clean lot of headroom Demeter with the fat warmth of the Noble. Mini-rig of doom!

I'm looking at the Demeter but have seem some complaints/comments on TB about hiss. How quiet is it? Suitable for studio use? If it's not silent I would have to look elsewhere.

I'm looking the Demeter Minnie 800 and the Jule M700 power amps. Apparently the Demeter uses the B&O ICE power module and the Jule uses a Hypex module with a separate power supply. There is a thread comparing the two. I like the small size (and lower price) of the Demeter, but am wondering which will pair best with the Noble and which is quieter. Seems like the other threads say the M700 is dead silent and the Minnie 800 might have a bit of hiss (ok for gigs but maybe not for studio use).

Most economical would be a rack mountable power amp, but I would rather have something smaller.

To my ear, you have to crank the demeter to hear hiss. It doesn't bother me. Plus, I just go direct in studio.

Yes, but I like the size of the Demeter better.

So do I. But as well as hiss, there were also some reports of thermal shutdown with the Minnie. Maybe hearsay and maybe faulty memory by me. I also think I read that James Demeter did rectify the problem. Another possibility is the (now defunct) SWR Amplite. 400 watts @ 4 ohms. They're discontinued and only available used, but the size was what I'd be looking for. I wish there were more choices for a compact, reasonably priced mono power amp.

I owned both the Minnie and M700 (using a Monique preamp, not the Noble, with both) and found the hiss very pronounced. I agree that the Minnie form factor is attractive, but in actual performance and quality the M700 blows it away. The M700 truly has the feel of bottomless power (within reason) as its power supply is rated for well over the output of the module (I believe it's 1200W).

Anyone looked at the new Phil Jones Bass D400? 400W @ 4 ohms, class D power, small form factor, no fan noise - $799 list.

Not really what I'm looking for. I'd like to get a Noble pre/di (I'm loving what I've heard from them so far) and pair it with a small (in physical size) power amp. Not looking for a rack setup or another integrated head right now (got several).

Helpful perspective. Thank you. Do you still have the M700? If not, why did you get rid of it....is there another even better choice (besides the Noble power amp which does not exist yet :-) )?

I would sure love to hear what others are finding they (and their sound guys) like best for EQ settings. I know what sounds good to me in my basement and even on stage, but what do engineers seem to like as input to the board?

Flat? Noon (half)? Max? Bass cut switch activated or not?

Thanks!

I have about eight or nine gigs under my belt using the noble now. I initially tried several different settings, boosting things way up as well as activating the bass cut switch.
While at home these sounded great, but after some real world experimentation it proved too much, and IME more simple/subtle settings seemed to work best. During the last several shows I have settled on keeping the treble at about 9:15, bass control flat(all the way down) and the bass cut left flat or deactivated as well.
Keep in mind my Lakland P's both have very hot pups(20-24k output), which tend to be a little dark and I am playing in a live and loud rock setting, so this may be too much treble for most. Finger-style volume/tone on the bass guitar is generally at 100%, and when using a pick I roll the tone control down appx. 30%.
I plug directly into the power section or effects return of whatever amp is provided, and this has proved to be the setting that provides the high cut, mid punch, and low girth I need for my present situation. FOH has no complaints, only compliments and the Noble has provided a consistently gratifying tone using different amps in a variety of venues.
I think it it is worth mentioning a couple other things as well... I have had little choice other than to pack the Noble in my luggage that I check in when taking flights. It goes in a flight case then is placed inside the suitcase so it is somewhat protected, but I can only imagine what the Samsonite Gorillas are putting it through. Fortunately, I haven't had one issue and it has proved road worthy thus far. It has been dead quiet, too, no hiss/buzz or grounding issues what-so-ever.
I initially purchased the Noble mainly for fly away gigs, but it has quickly made itself an indispensable part of my signal chain, especially when paired with my CB Cali76. Near or far, you won't catch me without it!
