Noble Amps Preamp

Looks like the HX Stomp requires 3000ma (3a) ... ! and the Noble provides 800ma max, which of course is plenty for the usual set of pedals.

that HX Stomp really has some serious draw !

The HX Stomp doesn’t draw 3A, it’s the output of the transformer. Cioks did a measurement on YouTube and the current draw was about 850mA.

I asked Jack about it some time ago and got this answer back.

“I’ve had a few guys asking about the HX Stomp lately but unfortunately no, I cannot recommend powering it from the Noble DI. When I measured the HX here it needed more than 1000mA to power up and turn on all the lights. Line 6 even used a different DC jack on the HX that will not accept a regular DC cable (like those I ship with the Noble preamp) to make sure you only use their DC-3G power supply. It’s a drag but the reason they did this is because the HX Stomp takes so much current that it could damage other power supplies.
If you get a custom cable and power the HX Stomp from your Noble DI, a few things might happen:
1) the high DC load could cause extra noise and humming from the Noble DI (not a huge issue, but possible)

2) the Noble power supply might overheat and turn off (maybe in the middle of a gig!)
3) the Noble power supply could be damaged over time
So for these reasons I think you will have the best results using the Line6 DC-3G power supply.“

ah, ok. A little confusing though because it says 9VDC/3A right at the power supply plug jack on the device itself.

Yes, really confusing. I have no idea why they put such a high power requirement when it’s clearly not at all that much needed.

I hope I didn’t come off as a smart ass. It’s a common thing to pack a power adapter with a lot more mA than needed and I thought that was the case. Didn’t know about the 9V/3A on the pedal itself.

It's because that power supply is used for many other devices in the Helix line, and probably other non-Helix devices as well. It's cheaper for them to reuse parts that are already in production versus having a proprietary power supply for each device.

its all good. I got no dog in this hunt in any event. Just was surprised to read about an outboard device that, on its face, seems to require that much power. It does seem like a pretty feature packed little box, so I guess I should not be surprised.

I just read the “manual” and didn’t see the range of dB’s boosted by turning the volume knob up while leaving EQ flat. Anyone know the numbers? For example, X boost at 9:00, Y at 12:00, Z at 3:00, A at Full On.

Jack Roan just emailed the answer to me:

With the EQ flat and the volume at max you should get +20dB from 1/4” input to 1/4” output. The XLR output is +6dB with the EQ flat.

Had my first live gig in 5 months last night ... a very toasty evening in NCal for sure, but it was sure nice to be playing for people in a live setting. Nothing special, a blues trio (mostly Chicago style). But I had my Noble out and was reminded once again how much I love that little tone monster box.

Lull M4V (in passive mode) => Cali76 => Noble DI => Mesa WD800 (EQ pretty flat) => Berg NV212t ..... just great full, defined bass tone all night.

there is a manual ? I got my Noble DI used. It was in great shape and came in its original box, but I don't recall getting a manual. Dang!
FWIW, up thread somewhere, someone posted a really handy set of graphs showing the impact of the EQ and HPF controls over a range of settings. This was in response to some on TB who were claiming that the Noble was mid-scooped .... which natively, it is not. I found those graphs very useful when they were posted.

I don't recall that anything was shown re dB levels associated with the Vol control though.

Attached is a PDF of the Noble Preamp Manual. Came with my Noble in December 2016. One concise page, including a few notes I added.

hey, just curious is any of you other Nobel users are pairing it with the Cali76-TX comp ? I am using a Cali76CB with my Noble and have been very happy with both boxes, but I am aware of the Cali TX boxes and have seen a few f/s.
