Noble Amps Preamp

Received my Noble pre/DI earlier this evening. So inspiring. Brought my precision basses w/ flats to life! Can't decide if I like the low-cut with bass boosted to compensate or a more flat response but it all sounds incredibly fat and rich.

Threw my Suppa Phat Phuk in front of the Noble to drive the tubes a bit. Along with the germanium-based grit (nothing too nasty), the Noble got downright funky. And one can get some surprising tube grind and overdrive when boosted.

So so happy. Killer pre-amp, Jack!

edit- the high/low pass filter really doesn't help much beyond engaging the low-cutch switch and boosting the bass quite a bit. really helps to sit the bass above the kick.

Another one for me is a great band from New York called Skout. Fleetwood Mac meets Indigo Girls meets Candyrat guitar playing. The whole record is my 65 P with flats straight into the Noble.

Band's got a nice vibe. Bass sounds smooth and has depth -- almost like there's some Jazz mixed in -- without losing the mids. Nice -- found myself listening to that little snippet over and over. Good playing, too.

Hey ladies and gents...
I've been looking for a simple OD...not fuzz, or distortion.. not even so much OD that it's close to distortion..
I'm not having too much luck.

I have a thought.. would a Boost pedal into the Noble overdrive just enough to get a little dirty?
Something like the TC spark.. the mini one, or an Xotic EP boost?
Thanks for any advice, knowledge or experience.

That how I've been using my Noble as of late. It is possible to get some subtle overdrive with a boost ahead of it.

Southhampton 5th gear is exactly that.

Any Noble players that also have a Alembic F2b or F1x? I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the tone compares between those two, since I own an Alembic it would give me a reference. Would def be great to have that sound in pedal form. Thanks!

I haven't really used the bass cut switch until tonight. Why does engaging the bass cut and slamming the bass sound so good? Is it getting extra tube warmth from the low frequencies?

My guess is that it brings out more of the upper bass and low mids. And you're probably increasing the gain a bit to make up the difference in volume and drive the tubes a bit harder. And to me there's more clarity.

Noble arrived on Thursday. I've had it on 2 gigs so far... One on Upright, the other a modern Jazz/Rock(Wayne Krantz like) group with the P-Bass. This thing kills guys ha! It is so fat sounding in the mix, and I LOVE the way it drives the front end on my TH500. What I really like is how sweet the treble is. You can really crank it up without it getting harsh. Just a terrific box all around. Kudos to Jack!

I no longer have the M700 but it has nothing to do with it not meeting expectations nor do I think there's anything better in that category right now. I currently use a Mesa Subway D-800. I still feel that the M700 had a little more punch and the feeling of bottomless power on tap, but the Mesa (and from reports I've read other micros using the newer ICEpower modules) does sound a heck of a lot better than the previous generation of ICEpower micros (which includes the Minnie).
Did you run the Noble through the Aux in or the input jack?

Thanks! That video was a recording of me rehearsing for the release show this week. The original was recorded with a Reddi. It has been mixed and mastered, though so not a 100% comparison. Not to mention the compression on youtube really doesn't do any justice to properly recorded audio. uploaded it below.

My comparison having heard both raw audio files is that they are very different sounding pieces of gear. The Reddi has its sound and it is great, but thats it. The Noble definitely has a distinct sonic character that I like a little more than the "in-your-faceness" of the redid, but the eq makes it moldable to different circumstances. The best sound is when I run the noble as a preamp into the Reddi. But thats just crazy talk.
Ha! Just did the same last week with Noble >> Neve DI. I thought I heard something different than just the Noble and I kind of wish I didn't :) So many variables- So many tones possible...
