NON-Neutrik Speakon Cable. Performance?

I just want to make up a few extra cables to run from my 550W head to my cab (under 6 feet). So 16 gauge speaker cable is right?

That will work fine. Also, if you look at what your cab is wired with, you can bet that most manufacturers aren't wiring jack to speaker with 12 or 14 gauge...so running a HUGE speaker cable makes no sense if its terminating to small stuff in your cab.

Unless it is a long cable run to minimize wire losses.
Yeah, but I figure his 6 feet and under isn't much of a problem. When I'm building longer cables for PA use (25 to 50 feet) and I'm using amps that will be pushing 1Kw or more, then I'm more picky about what cable I'm using.

I prefer the FC's more than the FX's...
Could (all three of) you elaborate on why? I prefer the FXs for several reasons
  1. contacts are rated 40A (FX) .vs. 30A (FC)
  2. FX costs less.
  3. FX has a right angle kit available (oddly, typically cheaper for connector and kit than the right angle FX.)
  4. Latch seems better.
  5. Neutrik claims they are improved (presumably .vs. FC) WRT contact design, latch, etc.
So I'd like to know what your reasons are for preferring the FC (I'm curious, since you are clearly more high-volume users than I am, so perhaps you know something I don't - please share.)
(I had to go on what I could sort out sight unseen before ordering, unfortunately.)

I find the cuff design on the back of the connector to be easier to handle and cinch in place. I find the insertion and securing of the wire to be easier, and more importantly 'in the field' I find the 'button' on the latch is just easier to use/handle and seem to 'click' into place a little more positively.

The problem is, if you use any vintage gear you will not have a neutrik jack on the amp or the cabinet. Example vintage Fender Bassman. I have not had any problem using regular speaker cables if it is heavy and high quality.

Low wattage, low current-----1/4" is no problem. Even my old Sunn Model T got me through about 1000 gigs in its day. When you start pushing 500+ watts in the low end, the extra surface area of the speakon is your friend.

FC, FX...I guess I didn't know they currently had two different models. I have a few of each, plus a couple of different looking ones. I just assumed this was an evolution of the design over the years. I've been using these for well over 20 years now. My first set actually had the old twist collar instead of the little latch. They still work (just not as convenient as the others).
FWIW, I don't own any speaker cables thinner than 14ga. Being the king of overkill, I always use 12ga. when I can and have a few 14's as backup.
