Noob question

I have an OLP MM3 5 string. I didn’t like the electronics so I replaced the pickup with a Nordstrand MM pickup (I think the 5.2, I don’t remember). It still has the original volume and tone controls. When I had it installed, I thought it was active so I had my luthier install a battery with it. It works fine but did it ever need the battery? The original electronics were passive. Did I get played by luthier? It’s my understanding now that it’s the preamp that needs the battery not the pickup.

However, if you ever want to install an active preamp you’re one step closer.
