Not knocking newbies or anything, but part of the reason there are 34 pages of results is because the same questions get asked over and over every week.

A quick search and then READING some of those 34 pages of threads would reveal the information sought rather than crude comments.

well then what would be the point of this entire website if all i had to do was go on a manufacture website and they would tell me what i want to know? talkbass.com offers forums so people who dont know can find out from people who do. so dont waste time with smart-ass comments please. we are all tryina be the best we can so dont **** on me because i asked a question. i could see if i asked whats the difference between a lead and bass or whats the stringing of a guitar. but even in that event if all you gonna do is ridicule, then dont post. like i said im new to the whole technicality(sp) and electronics thing, but just cause you dont have theory doesnt mean you cant play. dont get it twisted. im pretty sure i can play half you all under the table and im pretty sure half of you can play me under the table but thats not the point. i wanted a simple answer from your opinion. if i wanted a generic answer, i would believe what i find in my search, but i want other players opinions. thank you for those you took my question seriously

If you're going to be a part of TB, you're going to have to grow some thicker skin. Seriously.

The site has an archive and a search capability for a reason. It's a treasure trove of information but many who have been here for awhile get tired of seeing the same questions asked over and over and over.

And over.

It gets old. The information is here, in abundance. Just try and be a little more considerate of others when asking a question that, if you think about it for five seconds, has likely been asked before. There is a lot of good to be had on TB, but your lashing out at the people here doesn't help your cause.

So why doesn't anyone put together all the relevant info and sticky it?!

Comments like 'not another P vs. J thread' and 'dude, you shouldn't have asked that question here' are sucking more bandwidth and people's time than the questions themselves.

And why is it so hard to say that a P has a wider, thicker neck blahblah and a different pup configuration blah personal preference blahblah try them both see what it suits you best blahblah?

Think about this for a second now.....If you did that for P vs J, you'd also need one for "What's the best metal bass?", "Flats or Rounds?", "Rosewood vs Maple", "EBMM Vs Fender", etc., etc., etc.. Before you know it, you'd have five pages of stickies to weed through before you could read current posts.

Maybe a thread in the Wiki would be a better idea.

indeed rustynuts that question may have been answered over and over but that gives no reason for ridicule. say you are in a classroom and you show up 10 min late due to whatever reason and you raise your hand in class to ask a question, then your peers laugh at you because what you asked was covered your absent ten minutes. you dont even have to answer my question but atleast point me in the right direction. your peers in the classroom setting either could tell you your answer or point you to the page where your answer is. making jokes and just telling me to look for it doesnt help me because 1. i saw 2 pages of replies thinking that all of it would be help when that wasnt the case at all and 2. i dont know what exactly to look for or where to look. hence my original question.....

Same things over and over. Noobs ask the same questions that are asked at least once a week, some people respond nicely, some respond sharply, and some don't respond at all.

Noob sees everyone being harsh and uses the excuse that he's a noob and we should learn to be nicer.

Here is the deal, if you are on a large forum you are going to be told to search for the basics, sorry. That is just the way it works. It works like that here, and on places like VW Vortex. If you don't believe me, go ask them how to change the alternator on your Mk IV Jetta and see how many replies you get that say search.

People that come here daily get tired of putting the same knowledge out there over and over when it was just asked last week. If you don't like getting flamed, and you know the question has been asked, search. Search hard, read 10% of the 34 pages returned. You will have more information than you can probably handle and then be able to ask a much more specific question instead of generalization.

Specifics are much easier to respond to, and you will get the best answer possible.

From my experiences, I've found Jazz basses can get a bit brighter with the tone up or bring out a deeper low end. While the Precision bass also sounds very deep, can usually generate more mid-range sound and falls into the mix a little better in most cases with my band.

More importantly, are you in a band? What style music do you play? What do you want to play? Who are your favorite bassists/bands?

I suggest (if you live close to a music store) to go and check out some and compare them together - through the same amp.

Take your time and mess with all the volume and tone knobs on the basses and get an idea of what might work best for the sound you're looking for and what plays most comfortably.

The P-bass does have a much chunkier neck. I have smaller hands, so I prefer my Jazz as my "all around" bass, but others might tell you different. Some might say the P bass is the best all around bass for anything. I also own a P bass and it defintely has it's uses for me as well. Either one can be a great all around bass.

People can describe the sounds all day, but in the end, you have to buy what plays/feels/sounds best to you. :bassist::bassist::bassist:

It wasn't so much you that they were ridiculing as it was the ridiculousness of how often that same question is asked.

My teachers would have said you should have been on time. It was always my experience in school that one would not interrupt the entire class to catch up on the ten minutes missed but would rather spend his/her own time AFTER class to catch up.

They did. They pointed you to the search button and to Fender's website. There are many differences between the Jazz and P basses. A little time spent reading existing information would have revealed that to you.

The classroom analogy isn't a good one in this case. Again, why should the class suffer because you were late? And while you're trying to play catch up, you're falling further behind the class.

Okay, now I'll be a bit sarcastic, so pardon me. If you're looking for information on differences between Jazz and P Basses, wouldn't you type in "Jazz Bass" and "P Bass" or "Precision Bass"? That combination would reveal all the threads in which the two are discussed.

It's not hard. The sarcastic comments and jokes are really not aimed at you in particular. No one here wants to answer the same question day in and day out so they get sarcastic about it. If your mom asked you what your favorite color was three times a week, wouldn't you get tired of answering her?

The option would be to ignore the question, but then the poster gets POed about that too, then leaves the site and doesn't learn anything. No one gains in that situation. Now, you're interacting with the group here, perhaps you've learned that using search is a basic requirement of life here, and from here on out you can learn AND contribute to the site.

Consider it your hazing. Welcome to TalkBass. And don't take things personally.

I think everyone needs to relax a little - maybe the OP wasn't asking for exact technical information - maybe he wanted to read it through the opinion of an actual bass player, that's what we all are, right? That's why he's here. I know that I prefer to talk to my musician friends about their opinions on how things sound rather than reading up on technical information from a company's website. Ease off the noob. :rolleyes:

I didn't mind answering his question - maybe you should skip over reading the threads that you don't feel like answering. I mean, did you just post to try to make someone feel dumb via the internet? That's pretty weak. This is a place for information, some of us don't mind helping out - others obviously do.
