Nordstrand big singles... experiences?

I can't comment on the marcus sound, because I don't know it that well, but Big Singles are not dark in my experience.

Marshall

ok i just wanna know something...can i get a big but at the same time sharp sparkling slap sound????? the bass is a 55-01 maple freettnoard ash body retro preamp....please let me know your opinion

I'm not the best slapper in the world, but in my experience with the big single pickups, they naturally sound "big" and "fat" (lots of natural deep bass) but "aggressive" (high midrange or treble). I think the retro preamp and maple board would add to that. I think for what you're asking, that set up makes sense, but hopefully someone else can chime in.

cool mod job on the squire.

im thinking of buying a yamaha trb1005 just to put some nordies in with a ramp and restring it E-C. for such an experiment i would prefer that civilized and silent approach by the big splits as mentioned in this thread. anyone knwo if they make them sized for direct replacements to the yamaha pickups?

thanks for the comments guys, i finally got to use this bass at rehearsal today I i've got to say these Big Singles sound KILLER passive,,, exactly the tone i was lookin for,, nice lows,, mids,, & very nice top,, can get ALOT out of the VVT setup,,, & the tone pot is very responsive,,, i like that..

i have no way to post sound clips,,, sorry,, :crying:

here's a couple of photos taken at the studio today...:hyper:

that's actually a set of Fat Stacks in my Peavey Grind....:)

I've got my Lakland 55-01 at the shop awaiting some Big Singles and an extra battery to be installed on my Bart NTMB. I can't wait to hear what it sounds like. I guess Nordstrand is swamped with orders on their signature pickups so there's no saying when I'll actually get my bass back. We need a Nordstrand Pickup wait support group.

i hit it with 1000grit paper & totally took off the high gloss down to the color,, then brought the color back up with rubbing compound on a scotchbrte pad, so it would be a rough satin,,, if you use a regular pad with the compound, it will bring it up to a gloss finish on the color, but not a high gloss... i hit it with a touch of pastewax today to protect the color somewhat... the cool thing is, i just touch it up with scotchbrite & it looks great

I'm back with the big singles gas!

Was looking for another bass instead of just other pickups, but my bass is fine. I just want a more organic sound... and I just don't have the finances to buy a new bass. New pickups, the X2 if it becomes available in Europe, then I'm set for a long while!

Oh about the series parallel switch, I got an answer to that on the nordstrandforum, they adviced against it... because it would probably become a pool of mud. The big singles are already enhanced volume and midrange wise...

Though not Big Singles, I just got my Eugen 5-str bass fitted with Fat Stacks. It totally blew the old EMG's out of the water, and the tap to single coils sounded very nice too, very nice indeed. Top quality product as far as I can tell. This bass is back on the gigging rotation :)
