Nordstrand big singles... experiences?

This has probably been answered, but does anyone experience any excess noise with these pickups? Not talking about Single-coil hum, I just mean (for example) noise from touching the pole-pieces or when you take your hands off the strings. Reason I ask is I had an MM5.2 at one point and even in a bass that was properly shielded/grounded/all the do-da, I always experienced some noise.

Thanks!

yep,, has been answered already,, back in post # 60

I got it back and I'm happy to say they're awesome. I love the new tone of my 55-01. It's like taking my bass and adding $1,000 to the tone, even though it was only a $300 upgrade.

Well, Nordstrand does make a drop in replacement Single Coil sized Jazz PU for a 5 string. Just an option. You can get either hum cancelling or true SC versions.

ya, i know that Carey makes replacment pickups,, but honestly,, how can these wimpy sized pickups even attempt to compete with the monster sized tone that comes out of his monster sized Big Singles ?

if you look at all his pickups going in all the boutique basses,, they are all either Big Singles, Fat Stacks, Big Splits, or Dual Coils. I haven't seen ANY of the fender sized pickups at all.

that, in itself, speaks volumes folks.

also, an attaboy off to you Chris Breese for taking the plunge,,,, hahahahahahahaha ( had to do it ) would love to see a photo

You make excellent points. Now that you mention it, I have exclusively seen the Fat Stacks, Big Splits, Big Singles and Dual Coils going into other basses. Good perspective to keep in mind. I own a Nordy VJ5 with Big Splits and LOVE them!!

who did the work?
stock preamp?

A guy by the name of Phil Maneri, (Uncle Toad here on TB), here in Columbus, Oh. did the work. He also did some routing to add an extra battery to the already existing Bartolini NTMB to make it 18 volts. here's a pic.

I must say this bass has gone from a pretty decent budget bass to a high-end quality sounding main gigging bass. I won't do a gig without this one or my Pre-Fender Kubicki.

P.S. sorry for the horrible pics. PM me if you want better ones.

How do the big singles compare to standard NJ4's in tone? I just had NJ4's installed in my MIM jazz, I haven't heard them yet but what are the tonal difference like between the two?

couldn't tell ya,,, but the NJ4's will sound great, i'm sure you'll get a much improved version of the ol' school jazz tone that everybody loves

but Carey's " Signature " line of pickups are in a class by themself

i personally have a MM-4.2 in a Fernandes Atlas, a set of Fat Stacks in a Peavey Grind, & the set of Big Singles in the Squire.

i was actually thinking about dropping a set of SCN's in my Am Dlx V when i first got it in,, but now,, i think a set of Nordies will be in this one as well

I get some hum with mine when I'm not touching the instrument, but that's probably because I messed up Chris' squeaky clean wiring job. :( I'll need to take another look at it one of these days.

I am really curious about Big Singles too. I want to know how how close they are in size to Bartolini MK-1 soapbars.

someone probably answered your question already but the big singles are 32mm x 100mm while the MK-1's are 34mm x 108mm. I have some MK-1's that i seriously want out of my bass because they sound terrible and i plan on fitting a big single into a custom pickup cover... if it doesn't cost too much. I would just swap in some Bartolini MK's (american) but It seems to me as if single coils are more to my liking tone wise...

Hey guys.. Just thought I'd join in this thread.. I'm currently having Nordstrand Big singles pickups and audere preamps added to my fretted and fretless McIntyre Jazz basses.. Finally had enough of the flat sound of the EMG 40P5 and 40TW pickups I had in them.. Quite disappointing actually.. I will post again when I get the basses back and share my experiences..
