Nordstrand big singles... experiences?

Well, my new Sadowsky Modern 24/5 with Big Singles is done. I'm just waiting for it to ship. I should have it by next week at the latest. I'll get back to you guys after I get some time on it.

I was just thinking about this thread. I don't know if it's my amp setup or what, but I really prefer the sound of my BSingles passive.

I don't know what it is about the pickups. I tried all kinds of different strings on my jazz 5 w/Bsingles and couldn't get the tone I liked the most.

Don't get me wrong, there were some very good tones, but it seems that when I took out the Audere and went back to the passive wiring, the thing came to life!

Just my experience/opinion.

ahhhhh,,, welcome back to the land of passive warmth...

it's AMAZING how these Big Singles sound passive,, so simple to find a good tone,, cause they're all good tones to begin with.

I just ordered a set of Big Singles to replace the Barts in my Roscoe LG3000 w/Aguilar OBP-3 preamp.

The kind folks at Nordstrand told me it will take them 8 weeks (!) to wind the pickups for me. I'm subscribing to this thread as a kind of support group to curb my impatience...

:help:

why people doesn´t like the big singles with pre i got one with retro pre and i´ve heard other bass with audere pre and i love the sound

I love my Big Singles w/ Audere 4-band. There is a huge range of tones available, but the amazing thing about the Audere is that the full range of all the controls is usable. It gets extreme but never unusable even at full boost.

4-band, Z-mode, and passive tone control.
I thought all the Auderes came with the Z-mode switch, don't they?

The bridge pickup soloed in Lo-Z mode is a seriously ballsy sound, it's a very cool option to have.

They have an Audere Classic preamp now that's a 4 band preamp, but no Z-switch. I guess if EMG can make passive pickups Audere ca make a preamp without the Z-mode.

I have to say while I love my Audere 3 band on my Nordy, ....BUT .... I HATE the location of the Z mode switch! It is right in the way of the concentric PU BALANCE/Mid control knob! That is just awkward. I like to vary the PU blend often, and during songs too! THe Z mode switch is right in the way! Maybe if they switched the Mid knob to the lower one and made the Balance knob the taller on the concentric shaft?

I will also add that the Z mode switch really has two useful tones that sound good to me. The third one is largely useless. (to me) And for that matter, I tend to leave the Z mode switch in the middle position ALL THE TIME. I'd be just as happy it were a dip switch in the control cavity. Set it and forget it. All just my opinion and in my experience. Your mileage may vary.

Are you having them custom wound, or is your Roscoe a six string? If not, then check out www.bestbassgear.com. They have everything in stock!

When I asked Stew @ Nordstrand about just ordering off-the-shelf BS's for my 4-string Roscoe, he laughed and said they'd need to custom build them for me. Asking for clarification in a follow-up email, I received the following reply:

You are absolutely correct about finding replacements for your (or any) Roscoe. Keith's designs are truly nonstandard and all of his measurements veer slightly off of industry standards, inasmuch as such things exist. An off the shelf set will not drop into your bass.

it's not that i don't like the Singles with a pre,, to be truthful, i've never heard the Singles with a pre. when i installed mine, i just ran it passive initially, & they just sounded so warm & full, & yet cut thru live, that i've pretty much dismissed the thought of having to purchase a pre for it.

I see. I thought for sure I saw a Roscoe with BigSingles (or similar Nordstrands) in there. The must have modified the route.

I guess Stew knows best!
