My first bass was a beat to hell Cort LP DP bass. I found its twin online for sale a few years back. I don’t know if I have any pics of me with my first bass or not but here is what it looked like.

My first bass was a made in America peavey fury p bass copy. I’d buy another if I found one in decent condiction that wasn’t over priced. There are tons of stories of people finding these for like a $100. I’d happily pay $200 for one in great condition, but most of the decent ones I’ve seen online lately they want like $400.

Everything about the look of this looks very familiar, haha. My cousin and I started playing in 1993, he got a Fury, and he still has it and still uses it.

Gibson SB400. Nylon bushings in the saddle that always wore out. Bought used at Schmidtt Music. Bought a Gibson because Gene Simmons played Gibson. Kind of a junky bass. Look up the price of them now.

Schmitt Music! Bought my first bass and took my first lessons at the Eau Claire, Wisconsin location back in 1993.

@BlacknWhite: fun thread! I tried to track down my first bass the other day (the model, not the individual instrument): Samick P/J, V/T, 24-fret rosewood board, black finish, gold hardware, bought new in 1993; I didn't find anything quite like it. (EDIT: found it, though mine was a four-string.) (EDIT AGAIN: Here's the four-string.) I realize now that it had probably been there a few years, and that it was probably mimicking Cliff Burton's Aria Pro II with that combination of finish and hardware. I experienced what I now know to be my first bout of G.A.S. not quite a year later and traded toward a blacked-out Jackson Concert EX because the guys in Megadeth all played blacked-out Jacksons at the time. I ended up trading that for my third Westone, which finally got me solidly hooked on Matsumoku-made instruments from the '80s. Would I buy that Samick again? I'd have to play it, but I'd like the opportunity. My feelings on tone and feel have changed so much since then. But I'm certainly not above playing no-name instruments.

Japanese jazz copy. No I wouldn’t buy it back but if I still had it I would use it as a project bass and upgrade everything.

My first bass was jazz bass copy from crap local brand. Sell it and no turning back. But my second bass, it's another story. It's Sting signature and I really regret selling it. I'll buy it again if I had money

Totally agree. My feelings on tones and feel have changed so much over the years. I have probably owned well over 40 bass's since my original. It was funny though because as soon as I got that Yamaha back in my hands it just felt right. I actually remembered the first time as a teenager picking up the bass and hearing it through my amp for the first time thinking it was the coolest thing ever (and I still do lol). Anyways glad to have it back after 20+ years and it won't be going anywhere this time lol.

Here it is! Other than the 5th string, this is identical to what I had. I do remember a pickup selector switch; I don't remember a third knob. (EDIT: Here's the four-string, and why I don't remember a third knob.)

I certainly could have started on something worse. That I didn't probably has a lot to do with my sticking with it. (What did quitters do in the days before craigslist? I never found out, haha.) At least that's what I told people when I talked them out of the cheapest models in my brief stint as a kayak salesperson, haha! It worked because I believed it myself.

If one came up locally at this price, I would have to check it out.
