Nostalgic buy

my first bass was a Global SG bass... red. Mowed yards to pay the 80 bucks at the pawn shop for it. Short scale, bowed neck... sounded like crap. I dismantled it in an early attempt at customizing... found it to be plywood. I was only 14, though.. so I had no idea what that meant. I'd never own one again. I'd love, however to get my old Vester with a 5 piece neck and active pickups back... it was my 2nd, and was stolen. I loved that bass.

It was Squier Affinity P-Bass in Metallic Red with Rosewood Fingerboard (031-0400-525), bought somewhere in mid-2000s (but the bass could be from end-90s, like 1998, not sure), made in China. Looked exactly like this, these models also came in the 'starter pack' bundled with some small amp. As far as I know, in those days, Affinity bass had these smaller tuning pegs and 1-ply pickguard, usually white.

Eventually the pickguard cracked around the jack socket (because of course I stepped on the cable a few times), but I got two or three black replacement ones made. Gave the body to some guitar shop and they repainted it black, was a decent paint job. Replaced stock pickup with Seymour Duncan Hot P-Bass (SPB-2) and also did first shielding attempt with aluminum foil and glue - it worked, but it was very crummy of course. So this was a bass I kind of learned how and what to do and most importantly what not to do - I think I stripped the truss rod nut.

I still have it laying around, but I've taken it apart completely. Maybe I'll use the body for something in the future, but the neck is useless, and I also played it so much that lower position frets got munched a bit, and with the truss rod not adjustable anymore, it's not worth to try and salvage anything out of it.

Right now I have Squier Standard Precision Bass Special (PJ, Antique Burst), Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass (also a PJ, Three Tone Burst), and just bought Squier Vintage Modified '70s Jazz Bass (Natural finish with maple fingerboard). They are all in excellent condition and are really the same thing as the first Affinity P-Bass I had, but improved and better, especially with the setup, care and maintenance experience that I've got during the days of abusing and experimenting on that poor Affinity P-Bass.

I still have my 1st bass and continues to be my all time favorite and most comfortable playing. It’s an 86 Fender MIJ Medium scale P Bass. Bought it in The early 90s for A couple hundred bucks. I did not know just how special the mij medium scale bases are until years later when a guy I was jamming with used the bass for a set and went crazy for it. The guy even showed up at my door with a grand in cash for the bass but I still turned him down. I’m keeping this one.

My first bass was a 1967/8 Höfner 500/1, my Dad bought it for me in 1975, I sold it to my teacher in 1976, now 42 years later he still owns it and plays it occasionally (he's mainly a violinist). I got dibs on that bass if he ever sells it. Andrei if you're reading this, come on man, 42 years, let go of the bass...

I'm happy and lucky to say I'm actually in the process of regaining my first two basses, 2 old Fenders I bought at the same momentous moment long ago, and if Christmas had gotten in the way I'd have the priority piece right now. I can still smell vintage FENDER from the day I got them.

It's a 80's Yamaha rbx200. I actually just picked it up today! Cleaned it all up did some resoldering. Sounds killer and I remember why this bass got me into music. Good luck on your two bass's. You'll have to post em on here once you've got them.

My first was a 1963 Hofner 500/1, purchased new in early 1964 at Schmidt Musik in Kirschberg, Germany. I actually bought two of them that day. One for me and one for a best buddy. The cost was 360 DM each. Conversion rate at that time was 4 DM to the dollar....so $90 each. My buddy repaid me from gigging money.

I sold mine the fall of 1966 stateside for $360. Yes, dollars...Paul (not knighted yet) had become very popular. My buddy still has his. It is one of only three basses he has owned in all that time.

I loved the bass at the time, but the 500/1 is no longer a favorite for me. I do not own one and likely would not buy another....although I do like the look of the German made blondie Berliner model.

No, I have no interest is repurchasing my short scale no named Japanese bass. In fact the only piece of gear I regret selling is my Hiwatt Custom 100 head 401 years ago. Now that was a mistake, even though I made out on the deal and then some.
