If you go back back and watch RHCP at half time they made it super obvious. Didn’t even bother to plug their bass or guitar in to anything, and the drummer played wrong fills all over the place.

One of the best halftime show IMHO. Kendrick was superb. Snoop looked like he was having the most fun of anyone in attendance. I really liked it!

Interesting. Reading this thread (and myself included) thought he was the weakest of the bunch. I could barely hear/understand anything he did.

I loved that period when there was single artist or band in the halftime show, especially the big rockers who didn't have to lean on a stage/light/dancer/Impala show. Having seven or eight artists onstage doing medleys leaves things feeling a bit watered down.

While I enjoyed the show, it left me unsatisfied. In reality, Snoop and Dre basically played 3 of their songs... I was hoping for much more. Same for Eminem, one tune isn't enough. These are HUGE acts and it felt like they barely scratched the surface of their hit catalogs.

Vision, Creativity, Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Piano, and Lyrics. All on his level.

She really brought it on the Prince tribute show a while back. I thought she was best in show. But she was performing his music. I tried to immerse myself in her stuff after that - while it's not bad at all, the one element you didn't list above is songwriting, and her material isn't special. At least not yet.

I think it's an evolution owing to a few factors.

1 - The music industry overall has a lot more collaborations than it used to - it's almost like jazz in the sense that one dude has to be the bandleader on a given record but when you look closely there are cats all over it. So it's more normal culturally to have a lot of artists playing together than, say, 20 years ago. Prince wasn't sharing the stage with anybody, even in 2007, and you get the sense he wouldn't have wanted to.

2 - The NFL doesn't pay for that performance, so why not combine a bunch of artists to share costs and enjoy the limelight as a group.

I actually think I agree with your point but I can see why it's going the other way.

50 Cent hanging from the ceiling was weird.

I think sometimes there is music that communicates in that environment. I think that music accomplished that.

After nipple-gate they do add a delay in the broadcast.

Seriously, the new Prince? I saw her live on the Today show a couple years ago, and all of it was totally forgettable and mediocre. And her guitar playing was not good.

Y’all realize it’s a review, right? It is halftime entertainment that is entirely set up and torn down in a 6 minute commercial break. You expecting a proper technical recital?

It was really one of the most entertaining halftime shows I’ve seen. Appreciate it for what it was, not what you think it should be.

On a side note I love Mary J and she slayed. Those boots were rocking. And props to Snoop’s crew for that outfit that was a not so subtle Rams uniform. And so good to see Dre back in it after his health scare. He’s a legend.

I'm not into the genre at all, but I thought the show was fairly entertaining. I could care less about the alleged lip-synching, as that cat was let out of the bag a long time ago. I also thought Snoop wearing gang colors and flashing signs was in really poor taste. I'm sure a lot of other not-so-subliminal stuff like that went right over my head. And I don't understand the staging at all...put all the performers in boxes so 80% of the audience couldn't see them?

Edit...OK, as somebody else pointed out, maybe Snoop's outfit was a nod to the Rams' colors?
