Is it me, or can you see the veneer backing pattern through it? What is the plan for finishing? If you're gonna do gloss, it looks like it will need a thick coat to both cover the texture, and make it so the thin veneer is not getting rubbed directly by your arm and thumb when playing it.
That looks pretty cool. Hopefully you won’t need to route the center of the log part.

I'll be sticking it down with black epoxy, which should also fill all the cracks and voids, it might need another coat on top we'll see. You can't see the backing.
If I position it right that should be visible between the pickups.
I didn't get any pictures but I epoxied the veneer down today. Annoyingly I had fetched my vacuum pump from my lockup but left the bag behind, so just had to do it the old fashioned way.
@Reedt2000 my apologies, you absolutely can see the pattern of the backing, I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it. It is much less obvious in real life than in the pictures, I'm hoping once it's filled and sanded it won't show. Worst case scenario if it looks awful i can just plane it off and try something else.

If you bury it in clear and sand it flat it probably won't be very noticeable, could be a cool effect. Call it a feature
Sorry still no pictures but the veneer is stuck on, and after sanding back a bit I flooded it with another epoxy coat to fill some of the cracks.
Also started prepping a bit of this wenge for the neck, it really is wild stuff.

Still plugging away at this in 20 minute periods. Got the body sanded flat today, there was still a few bits needed filling so I gave it one more epoxy fill, hopefully that will do it. This is just before filling again.
Looks a bit scabby round the edges, but I've not bothered doing the bits I know will be cut away.

I really like the color of this. Looks like a vortex or a wormhole in space. This is going to be a very cool and unique guitar!

That would look sick! But having played guitars with binding it's a hard no, I just find it very uncomfortable. I like a nice fat roundover!

Here's a shot from about half way through. I thought I'd try routing it in small stages with a small router rather than a big router in one go, and I think it's a better way of doing it.
I'm not loving the colour of it now, the black tinted epoxy has kind of sucked all the life out of it, I'm hoping if I sand it back a bit more we can get some of that rich brown colour back.

What does it look like with a wipe of mineral spirits? That will be closer to what it'll look like with finish over it.

Sanded it back a bit more which did improve the colour a bit, but I need to stop now as I'm starting to see the pattern of that backing starting to come thorough as the veneer gets thinner, particularly on the sapwood.
