Keep them coming folks, this is great. I have been surprised several times already. For example, I always wondered why OLP never had any success south of the border, they were perfect for the 90s. It turns out they did! I also had suspected The Hip broke in the northern states (as with Billy Talent) but I have never really been able to confirm it.

Yeah - a few bands that we all thought should have been big in the US but didn't really crack. Like Barenaked Ladies. They tried a few times, but didn't stick.

I remember being in Daytona during spring break in the early '90s - every third song played at the 701 South club was a Tragically Hip tune. The few Americans there at that bar didn't understand what us Canadians loved about that band. I recall they made it "big enough" to play SNL but that was probably the Lorne Michaels Canadian connection.

Another one: Annihilator (metal) - apparently influenced many big name metal artists but never "made it" in the US. Or in Canada, really. Europe is another matter....

Alanis Morissette, Alannah Myles and Tears for Fears should be mentioned also.

To clarify...
IMO Morisette needn't be mentioned (according to the parameters set forth in the OP), I think she's big enough south of the 49th with her "Jagged Little Pill";
Alannah Myles was mentioned;
Tears For Fears is a UK band.

Was going to chuck it in earlier, but didn't, will do so now...

...Honestly, I think that program is awesome. It's very patriotic. Down here in the states we tend to hate our own country for some strange reason. If we were ever to implement a similar program, it would be the opposite. The government would force radio stations to document that they are playing at least a third of material from other countries. Because, of course, we suck. :rollno:

If that were true, a lot more of the bands in the OP would be more well known down here. I think what you meant to say is we hate forced nationalism.

As a 40-something, I've actually heard quite a few on your list:

-Kim Mitchell(I actually only know the song-had no idea who did it. Does that count?)
-Max Webster
-Tal Bachman
-Honeymoon Suite
-Tragically Hip
-Our Lady Peace
-Gino Vanelli
-Big Wreck
-Glass Tiger
-Len
-Triumph(of course! Rik Emmett is an AMAZING vocalist! LOVE Triumph!)
-Bruce Cockburn
-Allanah Myles

I had Alanis, but I guess she is overqualified for this list...lol!

One of the greatest thing to come from north of the border (though not a band) - KIDS IN THE HALL!

Which, oddly enough, is technically both an American and a Canadian show. Only the first three seasons were made for CBC, the rest were on NBC. I only learned this a few years ago when I bought the boxset.

We only got it from CJOH (Ottawa I believe) - the US networks never carried it where we were. Awesome series, and that theme song was killer too!

I am quite surprised nobody has chimed in with "my wife loves Serena Ryder." I figured she had to get some decent US exposure over Stompa, she had a pretty decent build up in Canada up to that point. I am also shocked Jann Ardenn and Amanda Marshall aren't massively successful in the US. I did find out recently through Leland Sklar's sub-forum that he played on Amada's debut record.
