Hating that which does not exist sounds like a lot of work.

It does. It's just not the law yet. We teach virtually no patriotism in schools today. But we sure do teach all the things we got wrong and make sure we hammer those points to death. This is a far as I will go here. OP was just having fun and is clearly proud of his country. Our discussion is for another thread.

I live in Michigan by Sarnia Ontario, I grew up on Canadian/Detroit radio, it has definitely impacted my music taste.
I love the Trews and Danko Jones!
They are in the area all the time, Toronto is an hour away, too bad border crossing makes it not worth the hassle since , but oh the days back in early nineties! Campbell street, and Riverport ! Sigh..
Campbell st and riverport....oh the memories!

Your posts in this thread really have nothing at all to do with the topic. What was it some poster on TB said recently about off-topic, semi-political posts? "You people just can't help yourselves" or something like that?;)

Agreed. I apologize and have discouraged further discussion of the matter here. I was the pot calling the kettle black. Thanks for the reminder.

I knew the Tragically Hip, Bruce Cockburn, Dream Warriors, and Len. I did not know Dream Warriors or Len were Canadian. Did Len have a career in Canada beyond that song? I thought of them as the prototypical one hit wonder - the song was inescapable one summer, and then nothing.

In the indie music world, there may be more crossover, but it's always unclear how well-known a "well-known indie" act is (for ex, not sure anyone mentioned Arcade Fire or Feist, but they are well-known in the indie music circuit in the US).

The Len crew was actually into rap/hip-hop from what I have heard. My friend makes beats for some name rappers and he was friends with a guy who knew the crew. He said they decided to "sell out" so they could do what they wanted with the money. I don't know if this is true or not but buddy does have some name connections so I believed him.

My grandfather was from Canada... I don't know if that makes me part Canadian (it's not really an ethnicity, is it?).

Canadian bands/artists I've heard of in the U.S.:

Triumph - I always liked Triumph, despite being a "poor man's Rush" :-)
Max Webster - The only reason I've heard of them is due to their connection with Rush. I used to have a bootleg of "Battle Scar" featuring the two bands playing together.
FM - Again, awareness through association with Rush.
Boys Brigade - Only heard of them because Geddy Lee produced one of their albums and mentioned them in an interview once.
Men Without Hats - I thought for sure they were from the U.K.
April Wine - If you were alive during the '80s, you've listened to April Wine... admit it!
Helix - Didn't know they were Canadian. Never listened to them, but I've heard of them.
Loverboy - Didn't know they were Canadian either. Almost as disposable as Honeymoon Suite, though (IMO, of course).
Honeymoon Suite - Saw them live during their 15 minutes of fame back in the '80s (opening for Jethro Tull... whaa??)
Our Lady Peace - Not a fan... just heard of them.
Tragically Hip - Same as OLP
Glass Tiger - Ditto
Bruce Cockburn - I'm SURE I've heard his stuff, but nothing springs to mind.
Kim Mitchell - Same as above.
Five Man Electrical Band - Another OHW I didn't know was from Canada.
Barenaked Ladies - I wouldn't say that they're obscure in America as someone suggested, though. They were pretty well known in the states for a while.
Jacob Moon - Got turned on to him through his acoustic Rush and Marillion covers. Never heard of him before that.
Corey Hart - Got nothing to say about him.
Bryan Adams - Equally ambivalent.

I'm sure there are others, besides the obvious Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Anne Murray, etc... I just can't think of any more right now.
