Right on, Jah. I feel the same way about Americans!

For those alt.country fans out there, here's some regional/national acts that I'm sure have benefitted from CanCon - or at least the Canada Council for the Arts - but not broke into the US...

Jim Bryson
Kathleen Edwards
Corb Lund
Fiftymen
MonkeyJunk
Mike Plume

I am not into country so I omitted names like Corb Lund and Gord Bamford, they would definitely qualify as "Canadian stars" in my book.

Okay...too close to home! I was on Definition, after 5 wins they retired you and you came back for " The Tournament of Champions" each year. I won five rounds, and when I came back for the tournament, I won two rounds of that, and won my biggest prize....A SEWING MACHINE!. Too funny!

You, sir, have made my day.

I knew a discussion of CanCon would ultimately get political (as often happens in Canada). I just didn't see it happening like this!

I worried about that, I hoped the music would overshadow the politics.

Fun fact, Heart's original line-up is CanCon. They're original guitarist was a draft dodger so he gets Canadian status.

On this list I dig the Tragically Hip. Have bought at least 3 or 4 of their albums since hearing "The Sinking of New Orleans" once on the radio while on a M/C vacation in northern New York state - a buddy has a cabin just east of Potsdam; and we ride all around the northern tier of NY and into Vermont, sometimes go up to Montreal for the Jazz fest...

Anyway some other good music from up north:

- Frank Marino. Yeah, lotsa folks didn't like him saying he was a Hendrix clone. To me he took what Hendrix did and kept the torch going. Lets face it, you can't go see Jimi in concert anymore. I've got probably 6 or 7 Frank Marino albums.

- Enter the Haggis. eccentric Irish Rock/Folk/bluegrass(new grass?) hybrid band based in Toroto we discovered back around 2003. The wife & I did a trip to Ireland with them once in 2010 played tourist and the band played local gigs at Irish Pubs along the way. We had a blast, saw allot of Ireland and had a general good time. They have since changed their style to a contemporary radio friendly sound and changed their name. So we quit listening, the music got boring.

Alanis's "Jagged Little Pill" is one of the best alt rock albums of the 90's.

And I didn't know Tears For Fears were Canadian... One of the few 80's New Wave bands that I like.

That was one of the first albums (tapes) I actually went out and purchased. I don't remember if I bought that or Jamiroquai's Travelling Without Moving first.

You know that "You oughta know" is apparently about Dave Coulier? Yes, that Dave Coulier.

It's funny that, although Leonard Cohen is a Canadian treasure, I don't think he's benefited much from the Can-Con rules. I can't think of many radio "hits" up here of his material, even though any number of his tunes have been covered to great acclaim: e.g. Joe Cocker's "Bird On A Wire", Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah", Madeleine Peyroux's "Dance Me To The End Of Love", etc. Certainly Jennifer Warnes' "First We Take Manhattan" got airplay in the 80s, but compared to say Gordon Lightfoot, Cohen's never been a Canadian radio darling.

And what about Andy Kim? U.S. chart topper and, of course, co-composer and singer of "Sugar, Sugar" for The Archies!

I think BS&T greatly benefited from David Clayton Thomas being Canadian.

And I swear that if I hear one more Guess Who song on oldies radio up here, I'll personally strangle Randy Bachman. [Even supposing I'd forgiven him for BTO.]

Big prize on 70-80's Canadian game shows was a $50 gift certificate for The Old Spagetti Factory. Nice!
