I can't take any list of Canadian bands that doesn't include The Weakerthans seriously.

Sorry Canada.

In my opinion, they fell under those aforementioned indie bands that aren't really "Canadian stars." I am sure the radio station in Winnipeg (and the CBC) plays them from time to time but I have never heard them on mainstream radio stations.

I didn't actually go to any of the links; I'm just going by names of bands I remember. I recall the name Glass Tiger . . . didn't they do "Captain of the Heart," or am I thinking about someone else? I remember "I Just Want to Stop," but I couldn't have told you who performed it. I definitely know Triumph, Helix, and Honeymoon Suite. The Blue Rodeo Casino album was one of my favorites back in the day.

I haven't read the entire thread, but was Voivod mentioned? How about Hard Core Logo?

Voivod has barely even had Canadian success, plus I imagine every Jason Newsted fan here knows them. I am pretty sure somebody did mention them, however.

I suppose I also forgot Strapping Young Lad but, again, not really Canadian stars.

To my knowledge, Glass Tiger's only other big hits are "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone" and "Carry me Home" (awesome duet with Rod Stewart) but I was only born in 86 so I am only exposed to the singles that stood the test of time.

I knew a discussion of CanCon would ultimately get political (as often happens in Canada). I just didn't see it happening like this!

Just for the record, I LOVE me some Canada! I was up in Montreal for the first time last year, finally -- what a fantastic city. It is of course sloppy thinking to generalize about a populace, but Canadians are by and large a warm and welcoming lot who love to talk and share ideas.

Many great record stores in Montreal, by the way.

I've been to Vancouver BC many times over the decades, but it wasn't until I got across the bay and out to the surrounding mountains that I appreciated just how grand the place. Wow.

Looking forward to catching up on the acts discussed in this thread, a good many of whom I've never heard of, sorry to say.

I definitely remember "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone." I looked up the other song I thought they did, and that was a big whiff on my part. They weren't really my kind of music at that point in my life, but I remember that my girlfriend back then liked them. They were popular stateside.

It is of course sloppy thinking to typify a populace, but Canadians are by and large a warm and welcoming lot who love to talk and share ideas..

Right on, Jah. I feel the same way about Americans!

For those alt.country fans out there, here's some regional/national acts that I'm sure have benefitted from CanCon - or at least the Canada Council for the Arts - but not broke into the US...

Jim Bryson
Kathleen Edwards
Corb Lund
Fiftymen
MonkeyJunk
Mike Plume

Here's the ones I've heard of at least:

Max Webster (because of they toured with Rush)
Tragically Hip
Our Lady Peace (heard about them because their drummer played one song on Geddy Lee's solo album)
Triumph (had most of their albums at one time on vinyl)
Econoline Crush
Matthew Good Band

Triumph was a regular favorite on U.S. rock radio for years, but they rarely come up now. I think I heard "Fight the Good Fight" on the radio a year ago. They also had a big presence at the '83 US Festival. "Allied Forces" went Platinum in the U.S., and a few of their others albums went Gold. They certainly made a name for themselves outside of Canada.

The others I heard about through other means, like associations with other acts, but I doubt I heard them on the radio.

I love the idea of CanCon.

Thank you DirtDog!

Yeah. Canadian Game shows vs US game shows...

US GAME SHOW: YOU'VE WON A NEW CAR AND A TRIP FOR TWO TO THE CARIBBEAN!

Canadian Game Show: You've won a brand new sewing machine. Woo.

Okay...too close to home! I was on Definition, after 5 wins they retired you and you came back for " The Tournament of Champions" each year. I won five rounds, and when I came back for the tournament, I won two rounds of that, and won my biggest prize....A SEWING MACHINE!. Too funny!
