this may not go down very well....but mate that is probably the stupidest question i have ever heard on this site...instead of sitting at home and pondering ridiculous questions like "which famous bass player am i better than" and actually get out there and make music, and all of the amazing experiences that come with it....that is what makes dee dee ramone better than you and with your attitude he always will be!!!!!!!!!i will give you one hint that may save you from probably going and playing guitar or selling your gear to buy a motorbike.....LEARN WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A BASS PLAYER:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I forced myself to watch a live performance of Fall Out Boy on tv the other day. Needless to say Pete Cuntz really pissed me off... he wasn't even paying attention, was wandering around facing away from the audience occasionally strumming a "chord" and as far as I could tell didn't play a single note on-time. I found myself thinking, hell I'd play for fall out boy if it meant getting rid of that guy. I'm cuter than him too.

if you can't hear that bassline,put some head phones on or something,cause this is the most creative thing i've ever heard come out of that genre...not to mention it kicks the s*** out of anything hoppus came up with

i think that just because a bass players lines are simple doesnt mean they are a crappy bassist. i think that in a 'typical' rock band setting, basswork is more about fitting in the pocket than playing something crazy and technical to stand out. i play thrash and death metal, so im used to writing fast, somewhat complex riffs. but i also play for my church, where im given a lyrics sheet with chords printed above the words, and i mainly play root notes, but occasionaly (depending on the feel of the song) maybe some arpeggios, 2-note chords, octave jumps, sweeps, blues-style basslines, some slap, etc. but based solely on watching me play a simple song that calls for just root notes, one could say i appear to be a crappy bassist. however, people who have watched me playing complex death metal riffs will argue that i am a fairly good bass player. playing skill (in my opinion) cannot be judged by watching a bass player play single quarter/eigth notes in a song that calls for it. if they can play in time with the song and can maintain a solid low end, then they do the job just fine. i think that crappy bass playing is when a bassist cant play in time with a simple song. it also depends on the genre of music. while les claypool is a fantastic bassist, as is sean beasely (dying fetus), having the 2 sawitch bands would have disasterous effects

I'm stunned this thread has survived this long!

I certainly can't talk about who sucks because I'm the *king* of suck. That doesn't stop me from playing and practicing and having fun, though. As long as my tag line, which I've been using for several years, is a little less true each day then I'm happy with the way things are going. :bassist:

Honestly, who cares about who's better than who? Isn't music the point, not which "poser" has the biggest eyeliner-to-chops ratio in the bass world?

as long as you can consistently say that you are better than the bass player you were yesterday, you'll never have to worry... but, if you're always forgetting what you learn, and getting "rusty" then you're in trouble, no matter what level you're at. my 2 cents

The bassist from Miley Cyrus is actually a pretty good session player. Unfortunately, the downside of being a session player, is you play for the highest bidder, and some of those people force you to play crappy music and go on world tours. Oh well...
