NoVA/DC/MD Fall GTG

karrot-x said:
Ya, odly enough I got home and realised that I see you post a lot. As well as Indi86, the name just never clicked when I was there.

Crazy.
I'm the stealth poster.

Jive: I wouldn't exactly call my ham-fisted attempts at copy catting "good chops". Yous gots the monster chops.

The whole GTG was awesome. People have some unique and crazy basses- and can really play them too! I was stunned by the number of people that came, and we filled up the front steps with even more bassists, basses, amps and cases. What that picture of Jive doesnt show is the circle of 10 people around him and five people trying to see in the door to the showroom.

Gard had the super Sonus. It's a fretless wonder and got many hours of play yesterday.

It's really hard to describe the sheer volume of gear that was at this GTG. So many Sad's and Laklands! The Roscoes were monsters as expected, and Joker's new SKB-3006 is oh-so-sweet.

Jive has a killer shop now, and I fully expect to spend every dollar I have there. I was proud to watch the very first Jive Sound sale go down just as I got there. DC will never be the same.

Whew...I just got home about 30 minutes ago...

...loooooooooooooooonnnnnnggggg day....

Kudos to Jive for putting this shindig on, and for getting a shop up & running in the DC area, something SORELY needed from what I'm aware of, not being a resident of the area.

Much thanks and appreciation to my brother jammadave & Jeff (The God Of Biscuits) for putting me up and for putting up with me. You are a saint among men, sir. All will be well, I have no doubts.

Dr P.P. (Dave, I have a feeling you'll pay for that one day...), thanks for the kind gift (which I neglected to remove from Dave's car, and feel like a total DOLT about), it was wonderful to put a person with a disembodied voice.

DCH, excellent. ;)

Joker is indeed a modern-day Stevie Wonder...is there anything he CAN'T play well? :spit:

Indi, dude, don't sell yourself short, you got it goin' on man! :)

I'm fried, too tired to remember everything that happened, everyone I met and talked to, and frustrated because there were so many I didn't get a chance to actually chat with and get to know. I'm sure one or two further memories will creep back into my pea-brain tomorrow....if they do, I'll comment then...

...bottom line:

Jive is one cool guy (...for a Bears fan...:spit:...and yes, I WILL update my #$^@% sig file tomorrow....just e-mail it to me...:bawl: ), and you guys that live up there - PLEASE support what he's doing, it's a resource all too few have. If you don't give his efforts your support, you will all look back one day and think "Man, what a drag I can't go try (insert cool gear here) out locally...". If that happens, it won't be Jive's fault, he's doing his part - do yours! :)

I will be dropping by from time to time, hope to see some of you guys there when I do! :D

That was my first GTG and I really had a blast.
I have tried so many sick stuff, 4 to 8 strings! Thanks Matt for letting me play on your amazing Conklin. Never thought I could handle 6+ strings. Well, maybe I couldn't :D
Thanks to everybody that came, bass players are really cool...

But especially many thanks to Jong, for putting this all this together, and for your warm welcome. If / when I'll get a new bass, it will be from you Dude.

someone said "that's the most beautiful P bass I've ever seen"
That would be me... And I do have a soft spot for P basses, particularly transparent red/orange over a goregeously grained swamp ash with pearloid pickguard.....

Thanks to Jive for hosting the GTG, Great job everyone coming out.

It was a bit nervous though, playing... Unlike the GTGs I've hosted, for this one there was usually just one amp going, one guy playing (usually an incredible instrument) and a room full of fellow bass players oogling..... So it was a bit intimidating picking up PJ's indescribably beautiful Spector 5 string fretless.... Particularly since when I started playing it was so out of tune.... DHC, that was very cool when you were playing over the little groove I was playing of Jane Kelly Williams "Show me how to catch a fish". Until the 5/8 bridge of course....

I'm hoping to host a little GTG over at my house maybe sometime in early December of January to get together and watch some of our favorite players/songs on the big screen.

Sounds like a great time, I'm sorry I missed it. I intended to be there, but my wife scheduled a furniture delivery for Saturday afternoon when she (conveniently) wasn't going to be home. That ended up taking most of the afternoon. Argh. I never had any problem making the Atlanta GTGs when I was single....

Fortunately, Jive's shop is in my neighborhood, so I'll definitely be checking it out.

Oh yeah, gee thanks Matt, for giving me the barest hint of 8-string Conklin GAS. Jerk. :D

Now where's that Mark Beem fellow with the basses for sale.... *DOH*

Deffo shopping at Jong's ASAP, tho. Probably that new Aggie rig we discussed. AG500 is SICK. As is the Pigtronix EP1 that Indi brought, and also his Bass Microsynth - I NEVER expected totally flawless tracking from an EHX pedal.

Hey guys, it sounds like you had a great time. I would have loved to be there but the wife scheduled us for a flight in a hot air ballon. Since it is hard to predict the weather we had to go with the Saturday flight. I was half hoping the guy would call Saturday morning and say that the wind was too strong to go up. I must say it was a blast and we had a great time. The landing was a bit crazy but I think it was my favorite part. I didn't know you couldn't couldn't control the direction of those things. :D
Anyway I will have to get down to the shop asap and check things out. Are there any pics up yet?

Here's some pics I received from JessRobinson

Me and the sick SKB3006 that Gard brought. The first SKB3006 for the first Roscoe dealer in the DC area

The first new Roscoe in the DC area arrives. Dr PP, protects the headstock from the top of the door. Dave (Jamma), Kevin (Kjones), and Aaron (Hollowman) look in eager anticipation. Karrot's buddy is walking out, but he's a drummer.

Let's see the rest of the pics!

As I promised Jive if he got my message, here's a little mini rant for me not being there....I'm soooo not happy about missing :scowl:

<feel free to ignore this rant...I have to let this out here before I snap on someone here at work or elsewhere>

Well, my band got called in to a gig on wednesday due to a local band cancelling, the other two bands on the gig still played though. So on friday I pack my gear and travel an hour west to this gig.

Joy #1.
On the trip, my exhaust decides to nearly fall off my vehicle. Currently my muffler is unattached, resulting in a wonderful sound while driving....and also I believe something is dragging...I'm pretty sure something is dragging...

Joy #2
coinciding with #1....my car is due for inspection this month. The only thing good about not making it to the GTG is that I have some extra money for repairs, even though I'm already behind on bills and everything...joy

Joy #3
We get to the show. We're expecting to open the show seeing as we only had 2 days notice. Also, band A(as they shall be called) was playing their final show, and promoting as such....and band B has played that town more frequently than we have and therefore has a better following there....not to mention they had time to promote.

With those facts known....we are told that we are headlining. Regardless of our arguing that, not only I had to get up at 5:30 the next morning, but our lead guitarist and drummer both had work the next day.

Surprise Surprise, no one gives a crap. We can go out of our way and spend the time and money to come bail these guys out of a rough situation....and we get the short end of the stick

....on a side note I was very disappointed by the bassist in the first band...our two bands have played quite a few times and me and him talk often....he used to have a nice nemisis 2x10 combo...and he sold it and now plays some no name 4x10 with a 300watt alesis power and behringer v-amp....he used to have good tone...now he has none...his lakeland can't make up for the difference...

I am somewhat glad I didn't leave saturday morning though...I did wake up at 5:45....but I tried to get ready...and I realized it wasn't worth it. I stayed at a friend's house in town to save myself some driving time so I could get to sleep sooner, but that wasn't of any help. I eventually woke around 10:30, after many futile attempts to get up and go prior to then. I knew then though, that there was no chance of me making it safely to Alexandria while dragging a part of my exhaust system....

So, I drove home. Chilled out, and crashed at 9:30....

My original plan had me leaving for Va at 6am and then driving home that night... I would have had 12+ hours on the road.

I am somewhat glad I didn't attempt it...if I had, I can see myself having had a serious accident on the way...

Gotta look on the bright side I suppose....... :scowl:

(end rant....sorry, once again, I had to get that out of my system)

SnoMan, bummer you didn't make it...it was truly a great time...maybe next time! :)

...and I have NO idea what the heck I'm gesticulating about to PJ in the background of that photo, but I'm sure he's sitting there thinking "Get me out of here...get me out of here....get me out of here..." ;)

(What I can't tell you is that we were discussing how to get ALL the money out of the DC area bassist's pockets....WORLD DOMINATION!!! :ninja: coughcoughcough :p )

lol,

when it did i suddenly own it! :eyebrow: :D

but yea, people, that skb3006 will rock your world. and at a ridiculous price that wont break the bank. anyone lookin' for a SICK 6 string, run and run hard to Jong's shop.

truth be told, many of y'all know the bad experience i had w/ the Roscoe shop, but now that Gard is there, and seeing/playing the fruits of his labor, they're easily back on my GAS list.

and its kinda funny i had to go 250 mi to make it to my first GTG, but is definitely gonna be one of the most memorable. great to finally put faces to avatars, and was most cool to find that they're even more hilarious in person. and yes, i've added "mudshark" to my vocabulary. :p and yes, they can freakin' play! holy crap, i felt like such a hack.

FYI, i still have to put up my pics, and y'all have to see that crazy wall of bass amp lovin' Jong sooo graciously let us piss overselves over.

RUB IT!

:hiding:

(sorry, couldn't avoid the Zappa reference there)

Joker, I'm with Indi, that bass has your name tattoed on it somewhere that isn't visible, but is nonetheless permanent...I'm surprised Jive hasn't called to reorder that one, because you've already bought it!

;)

...and by the way y'all...Joker is NOT a hack, he was prolly the most talented musician in the place, good guitar work, good drums (nice son rhythms, fun to jam over that!), and killer bass work...

Dave, don't be a wuss, he's Dr. PP from henceforth, and it's ALL YOUR FAULT!

DHC, you can run but you can't hide...

:ninja:
