Now I get why Metallica chose Robert Trujillo

Not being well versed in the drummers of a heavy metal sub genre that peaked in 1990. How dare you, good sir.
Ya know, I spent many decades harboring a resentment towards Trujillo for recording over Bob Daisley's parts for money and claiming he didn't know what was going on. Seemed suspect at the time. Same for the drummer that did the same thing. But I now know that harboring resentments against people that have no physical influence on my life is a waste of my time and my life in general. I dig his time with his other projects and such, but the Metallica he rolled into is not the Metallica I grew up on, so is not the Metallica I listen to. So, it matters not.... anymore. I am free from the burden of hate that kept my mind chained closed for so many years.
Where did you draw the line? What's the last album they did before you bailed? Just curious because I'm the same way about many bands.
Master of Puppets. I gave ...And Justice for All and good listen but when there was no bass, I said goodbye. To release an album to the world and play a practical joke on the new bass player by burying his bass turned me off for good, I've never been back. Death Magnetic was ok but never turned me on to more than a few listens because Lars' approach to drum sounds was just whacked to my ears.

My unpopular opinion on Rob: I am glad Metallica found such a great guy to play bass for them, but I feel his talent his wasted there.
Lars did some impressive blasts in the 80s. Maybe there is still some alcohol left in his system from that time that causes him to play completely uncoordinated fills at slow tempo and blurred his vision in such a way that he only feels comfortable using the snare right in front of him.
Whatever you want to roll through your brain is cool but that is not what is going on here. I think the same. But I believe he's having fun and his family benefits from the money. I don't know if he could have paid for the documentary about Jaco and his bass any other way.

I can dig this, and the sentiment from Micha84 as well. Trujillo could be making different, better music but I think he is satisfied with his current paycheck.
I never understood why people come down so hard on Lars. Are the drummers from the other thrash bands that much better? (Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer)
to be fair:
james is very precise in his playing and lars can follow, so he is not a bad drummer. a bit on a soft side, but not bad.
but...
metallica's peers [and ones that followed] birthed a few of the greatest drummers in rock'n'roll, and lars' ability pale in comparison.
his off-stage persona did not help, either.

Yes.
That, and he's a dork who alienated fans in the late 90s over Napster despite Metallica's career taking off in large part due to the word of mouth they got from tape trading.
And, Slayer have had both Lombardo and Bostaph, two legends in their own right.
For me it was Load.
Now, I didn't really know the band until the black album released, so while it did feel different to the older stuff, I heard that first so it still worked. Looking at it now I'd say it's not a thrash album, but it's still heavy metal.
Load came out and I liked some of the songs, but it didn't really feel like a metal album to me. Reload even more so, but with fewer songs I liked. And so on from there.
I don't think they sold out though. I might not like the music they've been making, but it still sounds like *they* like making it. So I just consider it a case of their musical interest went one way, mine went another, and that's perfectly ok and normal.
back to Robert Trujillo, I like to use him as a great example when people start to treat (Bass Player) as only being capable of playing a certain way, since that's the way they play for (Band).
I can't think of another band that's as polarizing as Metallica. From the music itself to the players in the band, you're guaranteed to find strong opinions on every element.
My hot take? I actually prefer the post-Justice, Bob Rock-produced material. And Jason is my preferred bassist.

Ya, but Lars wasn't wrong, history proved him right.
....and I don't like Lars, at all.
Trujillo had the best tone by far of all the people auditioning. Many of them sounded much too bright and thin.
Trujillo sounded fat, warm and blended in with band better than the others.

They grew up. They were teenagers/early twenties when they wrote & recorded Kill ‘Em All and Ride The Lightning.
Wotta ya mean? They have a great drummer. His name is James Hetfield.
