Now I get why Metallica chose Robert Trujillo

I knew he was a good bass player, but still, (to me) he seemed like an odd choice for that band. I get it now.

The guy can play and he’d been on stage and in studio with Ozzy. He had the resume.

He was playing high speed heavy music in ST for ages. Light… Camera… Revolution! remains one of my favorite albums and has some blistering tracks.

Edit to add - none of those guys in that video were slouches in the heavy music world, but Rob seemed like a pretty obvious choice, at least from how that was edited. Other than maybe Pepper, none of them but Rob had been in bands known for anything close to up-tempo Metallica (CoC’s Blind was a heavy album but it wasn’t that speedy).

I grew up near Socal, and by the early 90s, Robert was already a bass legend with ST, and then mind blowing when Infectious came out.
 That playing was a new bar for the rest of us in the area because everyone knew who he was. All of a sudden we all had crisp bright zingy bass tones with lots of snap... I still do!

Its funny, I remember seeing this Yellow Pages TV commercial probably back around '91/'92.

Generally, yes. I've never heard such an amazingly square, soul-less, mind-numbingly predictable drummer in my life. He makes me wish for a drum machine.

Charlie Benante of Anthrax is on a totally differnt planet from Lars! He's the song writer in that band.
Charlie has also been touring with Pantera these past two years. And he plays bass and guitar in his own solo project bands.

Nick Menza was at the centre of Megadeth’s most celebrated era, playing on four landmark albums: Rust in Peace, Countdown to Extinction, Youthanasia, and Cryptic Writings. He helped push the band into new creative territory with his astounding speed, precision, and dynamic control at the kit.

He’s a controversial drummer for sure. I’m not able to speak to the specifics with any authority or expertise, but there are many threads and YouTube videos on why he’s bad. To be fair, of the big thrash bands, Metallica has the most exposure, so any weakness would be more easily identified and amplified.

Charlie from Anthax was mentioned above. Megadeth had several drummers over the years, though Nick Menza was there for the Rust in Peace era and very highly praised and regarded. Gar Samuelson was there in the early years and brought a jazz fusion background that many found impressive. Slayer has rotated through a few drummers but the founding and iconic Dave Lombardo is also highly regarded. In fact, Dave played with Metallica and the comments section is filled with people who were impressed.


I can’t say I’ve ever been bothered by his drumming, even when I was a bigger fan of the band and trying to learn their songs, but I didn’t listen to them for the itemized components aside from the guitar parts I was learning.

Yes. Charlie Benante is a monster and Nick Menza who was drumming on Rust In Piece was an established session drummer.
