The guy can play and he'd been on stage and in studio with Ozzy. He had the resume.

He was playing high speed heavy music in ST for ages. Light… Camera… Revolution! remains one of my favorite albums and has some blistering tracks.

Edit to add - none of those guys in that video were slouches in the heavy music world, but Rob seemed like a pretty obvious choice, at least from how that was edited. Other than maybe Pepper, none of them but Rob had been in bands known for anything close to up-tempo Metallica (CoC's Blind was a heavy album but it wasn't that speedy).

It was like Lars said in the film. For all of the other guys, the music was 10% above their ability but RT nailed it.

And for some of those other guys, it wouldn't have been the right fit regardless of ability. Eric Avery is one of my all time faves, but I cannot picture him playing in Metallica at all.

That is what I was thinking. I have been jamming Siberian Meat Grinder and Misantropic. Metallica drums is like easy listening compared.

I never understood why people come down so hard on Lars. Are the drummers from the other thrash bands that much better? (Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer)

Metallicas really not thrash. It is classified as hard rock, "heavy metal" like Judas priest. Those drummers in Anthrax etc, are just as slow and boring as Lars. Take a listen to Siberian Meat Grinder or Misantropic. Thrash, D beat, black punk metal. Double kicks are a whole different sport, plus the snare hit speed combined with the toms cymbal changes/crashes.

Guys are just faster, and hard core thrash is just more fun to play, on bass honestly, imo.

I would be bored to death playing with Metallica.

You gotta be trolling. There's literally a commonly accepted "Big Four of Thrash" and Metallica is the most widely known and commercially successful of the four.

The Lars issue isn't that he's slower and "boring" relative to drummers in more extreme sub genres of metal. It's that he's arguably the worst drummer (certainly the most mocked) in the very genre his band is credited for defining.

Metallica moved away from thrash after AJFA and returned to it once it was financially lucrative to do so with St. Anger. They have always been trend chasers more than they've been thrash or any other single genre. You can hear them start to move towards a more melodic and accessible sound as early as Master. So yes, they have made thrash albums but I don't think they are a thrash metal band and I don't think they even see themselves as one anymore.

For example, I have a shell pink jaguar that I really like, and I have been keeping an eye out wondering if any famous dudes played a pink bass.

Just today I saw somebody playing a pink bass so I did some quick research and it turned out to be Billy Sheehan*. I've been hearing that name and wondering who he is since the day I joined TB. Now I finally know

He's got a lot more on his resume than that and is certainly worth checking out. Super talented guy. Very skilled. Highly regarded. A little high strung, but still very nice guy. I can't imagine how many Red Bulls you'd need to keep up with Billy and Gregg Bissonette in that era of the DLR band
…or even today.
