Considering it is part of North American Indian "religion" who saw the thunderbird as a powerful spirit in the form of a bird, I can see why he wouldn't want you playing it in a Christian church. As for your other basses....he is way off. Cost doesn't determine the worth of an instrument in Gods or real bassists eyes and shouldn't in the pastors eyes either.
That guy pretty much had the conception that Fender stickers on the headstock makes a professional bass player. Uh huh...

They never ranked on my equipment, but they did make reference to the "devils music" i played every weekend in the clubs.
Between that and their desire to convert one of the 144,000 jews as stated in revelations... My career as a Gospel musician was short lived.
I recall telling them "yeah that devils music pays my mortgage. I'll quit playing devils music if the Church will cut me a paycheck!".
That shut them up real fast.

Actually, when I first started on the worship team, my 'birds raised eyebrows. So, being the instigator that I am, the following week I brought my Wishbass. That was the end of that!!

Most ministers have a very simplistic understanding of the bible and Christianity in general. They read the Bible in an English translation and give no consideration to the context in which it was written (time and culture). I'm currently completing a masters degree in theology and am often shocked and appalled by what I hear in church and from ministers. This is the type of stupidity that makes so many people think that ALL Christians are cretinous buffoons.

Did you ask the minister if he or his wife wore jewelry or make-up? Or does he have any graven images in the church (photos, models, etc.)? It's all ungodly, according to the Bible.
I don't do church gigs anymore. Like stated above, too many folks don't really understand religion, and have some kind of warped idea about it all. But, not all folks, no. I did play in a worship band for about two years in the '90s. They were all nice and had no issues like that. The places we played were, too. But, I run into folks all the time who have it wrong, IMO. Glad you didn't get caught up in that band, considering what that guy said. That's pure tee ridiculous. If he were alive back in Jesus' day he would probably like to sit up on the front row with the Pharisees, so all could SEE him well.

I remember a long time ago I went to a church in north central Wisconsin (rhinelander) and the bass player was an older woman who played a beautiful sg bass. It sounded great!
