I just think they are funny at this point, like a couple guys goofing off. If you realize the only reason for the youtube videos is to advertise for the course, it makes it a lot more tolerable. They are a couple of nerdy middle aged bald bass players (I fit the exact same description, I just can't play as well as they do)... they aren't going to be actually "hip".

I saw one of the new Ocean Sparkle Sting Rays used here on TB. The guy had it for a week.

I got a steal of a deal on the same bass on Reverb.
I don't remember Sting Rays being so versatile. Just by playing with the tones, you can get a really nice thump,
or slap tone for days. But either way, it's so F'ing punchy. I love that!!!
As I'm nearing 6 decades on this planet, YEARS of playing in bands and working in loud factories, I feel I've lost some of my low end hearing. After 1 gig and 2 band rehearsals, I feel I can hear myself again.
I'm currently looking at a SR5.
My P basses are going to hate me for neglecting them.

I suspect you don't remember them as being so versatile because they*weren't* so versatile. That's the beauty of the redesigned Specials!

Honestly, as cringe as they are, they never lie and help many many folks enter and stay in the bass world.

Remember the OG wiggles, my kids do and loved them because their dad also played music. I could be cynical all day and night but when it comes down to it. Let ppl do what they love and if it pays their bills, good for them.

The StingRay in all of its incarnations, can be used in any style of music. It just depends on what your ears desire to hear. It also depends on stings and your hand technique and placement as to what you can coax out of them. They do take a little more knowing the instrument so to speak. Maybe it's not a plug in and play easy to get a certain sound type of bass. You have to know how to work the eq and with any bass, know how to get the most out of it. Same goes for recording and your sound man. It takes more time and a different approach.

I do think some people like myself will find the Specials to be superb. The voicing is more user friendly and lets some of the familiar vintage sounds come through. But it still sound like a StingRay. I also think that Leo should have released the original Stingray in both the original 2band eq model and the Old Smoothie model. Old Smoothie is very versatile. It is my favorite 2band. I can see how the Old Smoothie, Specials and passive models can be considered too tame for some players ears. If you love that aggressive 3 band ceramic sound and the USA Sterling voicing, you might not care for the warmer voiced models.

All StringRays do not sound the same. But they all are versatile, and they all sound like StingRays. I think it comes down to how much STING do you want in your RAY?

Amen sister! A lot of variety can be had turning some knobs, using different strings, and hand positioning.
