NPD DSM Noisemaker OmniCabSim

Quick report: loved the OCS v1 at the gig. I played BEADG five string through a hi-fi Reiner Studio 1200 head and single Bergantino CN210 cab.
Venue was a sports bar with hardwood floor and smooth walls. Using Cab Size and Resonance, I essentially raised the bass response of the cab, adding roundness and minimizing rumble. I also enjoyed voicing the top end with High Response: for this gig I played classic rock/R&B and used a Grizzly pedal for warm/gentle sag, but the High Response is even more effective when using- heavier OD with my hard rock band.

Brilliant! Just what I wanted to hear. Thanks for sharing!

New update guys

The enclosure and boards are still being made . the jacks i specified on the BOM were out of stock , so i had to find a proper replacement. It's very critical to have the right sized jacks for proper assembly.
Also, the pots are being custom made..

So..aside small inconveniences, everything is going well.,
I'll keep you posted

Cheers!

My experience : passive is bound to take some volume out of the "through" output, generally don't offer much controls / tweakability and have fewer outputs, but obviously don't require power (convenience and less noise I suppose). Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

does anyone know the pro's and con's of using a PASSIVE cab sim di (like a palmer) or an ACTIVE/powered one, like the omni?
Good question. There are more similarities than differences..A passive Cab Sim is made out of inductors, capacitors, and resistors..proper audio-range inductors are expensive, bulky, and tend to work as antennas, so they can be a bit noisy, unless it is very well RF isolated.. Also, it is rare to make the variable, unless you get variable inductors..which are more scarce than unobtanium..

Passive DI´s are the "original" DI´s. they work very well by isolating two devices and providing a well balanced signal with proper 600ohm impedance capability. The drawback is that they are transformer based. Again.. proper audio transformers are very expensive and bulky, specially because the bass response is limited by the size of the iron core..there are very few small signal audio transformers that can reproduce below 150Hz decently, and fit in a pedal sized box.

Active are more flexible than passive, so you can make resonant filters much more easily.. a well designed DI is no different than a passive one. Using low tolerance resistors, the balanced output is perfectly matched..
Generally, active devices are more popular than passive.. audio inductors and transformers are scarcer each day as the market for them is mostly audiophile (check prices for fasel inductors.. ouch)..

Question about frequency response. I've put a ton of time into finding the right sub pedal for me, and I have two now that both have a very solid push in the 50Hz and below range. I'm wondering how well the OCS handles the low lows. Is there attenuation in this range? (I realize I'm in a bass forum asking this question, but I've found some "full range pedals" to trim the part off I want to the point where I loose the grunt I want.)

the OCS on full cab size will be flat on the low end down to 60hz, then it starts to roll off.. if you add resonance, the response will peak at 60hz, and 50Hz will be around 0dB, so no loss there, but under 40 hz, there will be a lot of attenuation..

anyway, not many real speakers will reproduce such low frequs without attenuation..are you trying to make a "brown note" experiment ? :P

LMAO! I think subconsciously I am!! Thanks for your answer, I will have to try one to see if the attenuation is a bad thing for me - the box sounds fantastic otherwise!!

hello all!

just a quick update for all of you who pre ordered the new OCS deluxe..

No major updates on manufacturing since the enclosures and boards are still being fabricated..
I just ordered the new cardboard boxes for packaging. and this week i will focus on making a new user manual, which i´ll share with you in this forum.

i got 7 preorders from you guys and a good news is that a chinese distributor preordered 10 units, since the OCS standard sold out pretty fast and they were fascinated with the product. Those kind of things are very motivational!

cheers!!

Great news! Congratulations on the Chinese order!
What do you think about the June timeplan, is it still valid?

I'm really looking forward to this one!

Cheers,
Kalle

So far, mid june is still the deadline..we are still within the "production" expected time (4-6 weeks), so no changes to the delivery time..

cheers!!
