NPD DSM Noisemaker OmniCabSim

hi all,

i just got my unit today.

unfortunately, i don't have any info on the appropriate power adapter to use.

any current users have info on this?

i have tried a 48v condenser mic power supply adapter i had lying around. it works.

but i am a little nervous about using it for extended periods of time.

no documentation with the cab sim unit, any help appreciated.

fred

let me rephrase...

i was unclear with my description: i am using the AC adapter that powers my 48V Supply.

NOT the 48V supply itself.
oh good, you scared me! 48v would kill it in a heart beat...
If your ac adapter throws 9v DC, then we´re OK..It can put up to 12v without trouble..
about current consuption, it´s around 30mA so any tiny or big adapter will do. even a battery hooked to a DC jack will last like 10 hours..

here´s the manual link : [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I rather have the manual online than printing it..for practical an environmental reasons, the same with batteries..i share Darkglass policies and vision on that issue.

online manual is PERFECT! i just didn't know.

green green green! most of the medical companies i design for are moving to online IFUs.

so, i'm pretty stupid when it comes to this stuff.

is this acting as a preamp as well? i really like the gain stage.

sounds nice. more soon.

Well the intended use of the gain knob is to boost weak signals or cut too loud signals, trying to mantain the best SNR (sound noise ratio) and avoid unwanted clipping..
It boosts up to 20dB so, maybe it can be described as a preamp in a technical way (since it amplifiaes the signal if you want) but in the common sense it is not a preamp since it does not have clipping or compressor or the typical stuff that preamps have.

I´m very glad you are liking it!

indeed i am liking it.

i am glad it doesn't have the compressor and other "stuff" associated with most preamps.

anxious to use it with my strat and tele too.

sample clips eventually.

thanks again!

going back and forth between a couple of basses.

Fender Jazz/Aguilar Js/J-Retro Pre

and

Bacchus 24DX4/DeviseR Dual Coils/Aguilar OBP2

the Bacchus is MUCH for responsive to the OmniCabSim - lovely.

the Jazz... eh, not getting much change compared to the Bacchus. need to experiment some more.

not complaining AT ALL. just some notes from the field.

the Omni is a keeper. i'm still learning all this stuff.

now i need to reconfigure my studio routing.

live i will be using this side by side with my Boss SY-300 guitar synth (using the Omni through - i think)

bass to omni -

omni/out ------------------------------------ to big shot ABY - reverse Y to Yamaha DSR-115

omni/through (unaffected) to Boss SY-300 to big shot ABY - reverse Y to Yamaha DSR-115

FUN!

Probably the Jazz bass are more mid centered and the Bacchus are more open.. play it loud and you will "feel" the difference more than hearing it.. the bass thump gets more focused, and the high mids more articulated..

i think it may be the J-Retro 3 band preamp in the Jazz. the J-Retro has seriously "colored" and hot tonal output compared to the Aguilars.

these preamps are sensitive beasties - bit of a learning curve.

after playing my Bacchus with the OBP2 - i can kind of see now Roger Sadowsky's argument for a simple 2 band pre over adding mid-control.
i agree, the Bacchus FEELS more OPEN. could be the dual coils too.

and i can imagine at volume, the CabSim will roar. i am in my home studio now, so volumes are low-ish.

saturday rehearsal will reveal.

nicely done Daniel. THANKS!

What is the difference between this pedal and a two notes torpedo cab? Anyone have experience with both? That would make an interesting demo. I'm interested in cab sims in a pedal format but have learned to be patient.

Well, the most important difference is that the omni is all analog and the torpedo is digital..also, the price tag is quite different..the omni is more for tweakers and knob friendly people, and the torpedo is more preset based..also the torpedo includes a power amp simulator...

I haven't tried both for comparison, since no one i know has a torpedo cab..they are not available here, and the price tag is a bit scary for working musicians here..i wanted to develop an analog, more affordable alternative for them..

i like the analog approach.

man, i cranked this thing for about 10 minutes. i bake scones for my apartment managers from time to time, they love me, so i'm good. hahaha!

but, jesus F##K, the Jazz with the J-Retro is a MONSTER at volume. i know i already said this.

but golleee, the Omni is perfect with a full range powered PA speaker in front 1300W (LF: 850W HF: 450W)

i've spent YEARS trying to get the tone i was hearing in my head. i'm pretty close with this.

eegad, i had to lie down for a few.

this setup is BEASTLY!

gak!

love it!

the DeviseR dual coils/preamp into the OmniCabSim into my Yamaha DSR-115.

1300 watts - just insane tone and headroom!

Just fired up my new OmniCabSim & wow, i'm impressed! The controls seem really well thought out & are very responsive. The sample sounds Daniel provided sound like the real thing to me & all are great. I especially dig the "Classic 1x15" setting which even at low volume through my tiny practice amp (TC VoiceSolo) really fattens things up. Man I can't wait to try this through a FRFR setup!

Wow guys thanks for your comments!! I'm currently finishing the last 20 units of this first batch (i moved my vacation for next week) so i hope they are all sold in february, the next batch will be out on april or may.. On the meantime thanks to all for your support as i plan to keep making this and other new devices this year!!
