NPD DSM Noisemaker OmniCabSim

I'm going to the studio today and the Omni is coming with me.
As far as the signal chain goes, I'm thinking of putting in the loop of my Mesa D-800+ head and either taking the DI out of the Omni or going back into the Mesa and using the amp's DI. We'll see what sounds best :D

@Dsmnoisemaker This little device appeared today! Here are some pictures to give people an idea of how impossibly small it really is. Probably won't get a chance to test it for a day or two though, but will post thoughts/sounds...

Just as a quick update - i've had the chance to play with the new Mini this morning. Sh*t - it's great! @Dsmnoisemaker

First thoughts are that actually streamlining the choices have helped me a lot, so less dials is making me more focused sound-wise. I did think that maybe it would lose some of the OCSD magic - but no.
For anyone working with a small board, Nano+ sized, this pedal allows you to have so much space back. I could just be using a loaded IR to deal with cab-emulation, but the tweak-ability from a pedal in such a small form is really useful.

Texture seems to help tailor the mid-range nicely, resonance dials in/out the boom & the magic 'amp gain' certainly adds something, but i need more time to figure this one out.
The image below shows where i'm at working on a p-bass tone, driven by a B7K/SuperSymmetry. I've taken the Broughton PowerStage out for now, so that i can see whether i can achieve something similar with the 'amp gain' dial.

Hey @neonrich If you’re no longer in need of the PowerStage, I’ll gladly have a go with it.:);)

I'm so glad you liked it!!
The amp gain is the most interesting to me, when set right, it adds a nice bite and meaty mid-range..too much and may get muddy, specially if the input has strong low end.
Just note that used with a passive bass it may not clip if the bass output is too low..it works best with active basses or after a preamp/drive pedal.

Hi Dan @Dsmnoisemaker,
I was doing some recording yesterday & immediately found a setting that I just set & left.. a very good sign that it took no effort to find a great sound.
The 'Amp Gain' was wound up pretty high, but then as you pointed out i'm using mainly passive (Gus G3) basses with it so far. I've got an SFX MicroThump, DG SuperSymmetry & DG B7K running into it at the moment, so it gets a decent signal level. Definitely adds a nice flavour, which has put my Broughton PowerStage out of business for now..

Next I'll dig out the IEM's & see how it can help/tailor that scenario.

If I had any criticisms so far, they would be very minor... an audible click when moving the metallic switches (engaging bypass etc) & the black switches feel slightly delicate. Realistically though, these for most people will end up 'set & forget', so it shouldn't be a concern.
If you ever do a V2 - maybe an XLR 'pad' button could be incorporated?

Definitely worth the money & I think for anyone looking for an adaptable, small non IR-based cab sim, it's as good as perfect.

Hey Daniel!

I'm an OCSD mega-fan. I am considering getting an OCS Mini for my mini-board, but I'd love to hear some more demos online. Particularly with passive basses. I'm not sure if you have that capability. Maybe some of the loyal Talkbass DSM fans could help a brother out.

Thanks

Hi, Based on past experience any ideas how long the shipping process is ? My mini just got to
CEN CENTRO TECNOLOGICO POSTAL heading to NJ.
Thanks,
JC
It sits in customs for a while, if I recall correctly. Probably 5-6 days. I think it took me about 2 weeks, maybe a little more, to get mine in Michigan.

As soon as I get mine!
Awesome! And if I may be so bold, perhaps you could even make a recording or two of how it sounds direct with a drive pedal running in front of it? That would be . . . in the immortal words of Ned Flanders . . . Fan-diddly-tastic! That was a chief reason I bought my original OCSD. I was disgusted with how my drive pedals sounded direct without it. It's definitely a game changer.

Oh yes! Drive pedals in front of the OmniCab sound sooooo good

Indeed they do. It was a life-changing epiphany. I just wonder how the OCS Mini compares. You can't tweak the cab size other than to select 8x10 for bass, but that's basically where I leave it anyway. Otherwise, I also enjoy the mid control. Turing down the mid response makes it sound even more "ampey" to me. I'm not sure how much I would miss those options by having the mini OCS. I guess there's only one way to find out. Buy one.

I know what you mean. I use the Mid control pretty much between 9 - 2 o'clock.
My buddy JB ordered a Mini and we'll do a side-by-side comparison once his arrives :)

So I giggled my Omnicab dlx last night and loved what it did to my drive/overall tone. Particularly from my IEM perspective.

I have however, noticed there is a fairly high noise floor when just using it as a headphone amp. I’m using clean power (not daisy chained). The noise floor definitely is apparent when the pedal is turned on.

Any input or advice is much appreciated

Learn to love it! It's worth it.

Try getting a bigger signal into it and the noise floor will be lower.
The previous version ( the mono headphone) has a bit more hiss on the headphone out t the stereo version.

Most of the times when hiss is a problem is because the input signal is too low..the best way is to get it on the sweet spot is to boost the gain into it, until it clips, and then back it down a notch or two.

Got my Omni Cab Sim Mini in this week. Here's a short sound test - no post processing. First half of the demo is bypassed, second half is on. Test bass is a 74 P-Bass w/ EB Cobalt Flats. It's a good sounding unit, this is definitely a more subtle use. I was going for old school style amp sound.
