NPD DSM Noisemaker OmniCabSim

Just got mine. Daniel I can't thank you enough! Overall Tone and Dirt sounds so much better with it. Its what i wish my old SansAmp could do.
Interesting you would put it that way. I was messing with my pedalboard last night trying to get the best "Ampeg in a box" sound I could from various pedals. I decided to keep the Sansamp VT Bass on my board, but I have to use it in conjunction with the OCSD. I like my VT Bass for it's Ampeg emulation, but the speaker sim sounds like a toy compared to the OCSD. Sure, it cuts high frequencies, but it's dull and lifeless. The OCSD, on the other hand, breathes life into everything and makes it sound so natural, three dimensional and organic. I'll never leave home without it.

I just ordered the mini, now I have to wait for delivery from Chili I guess.

Do you guys find that you need to use a dedicated preamp in front of the OCS or will it sound good just running OD and distortion pedals directly into it?
IMO with the OCSD it’ll sound good with just OD/distortion before it, or with it just being fed bass, or with it being fed distortion into preamp then into OCSD

Yes, this. It depends on what your end goal is, but the OCSD will make anything sound better. No preamp needed, necessarily. I decided to keep a preamp in my chain before the OCSD only because I play primarily passive basses which I feel benefit from a gain boost and some external EQ control. But if you have active basses, I would see almost no need for a preamp before the OCSD. Unless there was something about the preamp itself that was giving you a certain color, character or tone you were after. For example, I still use my Tech 21 VT Bass before the OCSD because I like the "Ampeggey" character that it adds. I would probably still use both even if I played the one active bass I own.

I’m having some issues with my Mini’s. Both of them are noisy. The noise floor on one seems just way too high with all the other pedals bypassed. I take the volume up to 1-2 o’clock to get to unity and you can hear the noise clearly while playing. There are two pedals on my board that make it even worse. The other one has a fluttering sound that makes the pedal unusable. Sounds like a motorcycle. I’m using a onespot cs12. Anybody else have issues like this?

Just got the Mini in, and first impressions are: it's awesome. Really liking it both in headphones via DI and 1/4" into a power amp and fearful. The new tube power amp simulation sounds great.

I don't find the pedal to be very versatile, really it offers slight variations on one core sound - a bit more or less high, low, gain. But it's an awesome sound. My hunch is it really shines when tuning those variables to a room.

When the 1/4" out is effected, there isn't much volume available - you have to push it just to get back to unity. I do get some noise when pushing volume and texture (high response) above about 3 o'clock, but I don't see myself doing that with texture. There is more volume available from the DI when the 1/4" out is bypassed.

I think this little guy might replace a pair of tone shapers currently on my board, a HPF and an EQ, freeing up some space.

I can definitely see gigging just compressor>OCS Mini>power amp.... So I'm impressed with the tone! The frequency plots in the manual very much remind me of the Alembic on-board preamp-style EQ with resonance at the cutoff point of low and high pass filters. Very cool little box, and very impressive for such a small package.

Lovely combo.

Will Phantom power damage this box?

The church I play at currently has an active DI box (Behringer Ultra DI) which runs off of Phantom power.

My plan is to run a Le Bass pre-amp and OCSD's XLR straight to the soundboard and totally bypass the Behringer DI.

Do I need to worry about phantom power being on? I don't put too much trust in the FOH soundguys to remeber to have it off for me, but on for other people running straight to the Behringer.

Thank you!

Mine showed up today. Have to say this thing is pretty damn cool. It plays nice with the Mesa WD-800 head, and I kinda like using it for a bit more grit into that head running the gain about 3:00. Still messing with different settings, I think it'll be the ticket for when I'm going straight into a board (do that on most of the Farmer's Market gigs). Nice piece of kit and tiny.
@nostatic have you tried this with your Rob Allen basses? Trying to decide between a Omni and an IR loader for my ampless gigs with Rob Allen and other piezo basses.

IIRC Daniel answered this a while ago in this thread. I believe it's only ok for short periods of time.
You can also get a phantom power blocker that goes on the xlr output, if you’re concerned about it. I’ve only used mine a handful of times, but haven’t had issues yet with phantom power causing a problem. (I don’t even know if phantom has been on or not, though).

Thanks guys.

I may just buy a male/female XLR cable to run fromThe OmniCab to the Behringer DI.

It's one extra piece in the puzzle, but it is a pretty transparent DI.

That's a 10 dollar solution/piece if mind.

The newest release of the OCSD was upgraded to handle phantom power (if you dig back through this thread to find the details and confirm this). I don't know how you would know if you had the latest version to see if you had the upgraded capacitor to handle it or not. I have an older one, so I bought an in-line phantom power blocker.

Hey Daniel - I was thinking and I have suggestion for you.

I was reading most of the post related to the Omnicabsim Deluxe and I did noticed some people get lost with all knobs.
(Not all, 90% knows the Gain knob :roflmao: )
To me it doesn't matter because i use my ears most of the time.
But to others bass players they like to see the numbers.

You should rename 2 knobs on the Omnicabsim deluxe, to HPF and LPF where it sits right. I’m not a tech guy But looks like that function is already there.

It will be a game changing for bass players ( Must print frenquencies numbers around the knobs ) , and probably it will sell more because of the vibe and need on HPF and LPF pedals lately.

It’ll be easier and clear to understand.

Keep Doing the great Job.

I’m looking foward to get the loopster asap.

Good Luck.

I spend a lot of time figuring out how to name the controls, and i think the current names are pretty descriptive and intuitive.
I know there are musicians who know what LPF and HPF are, but trust me, it is not the majority. And also, i didn't want to name it like that because they are not really standard LPF and HPF. They behave a bit different, and i didn't want to get questions like "why does the Q change like this" or "why this weird curve" since the goal was to emulate speakers and not standard LPF and HPF (which have less Q and less slope).

BTW..
How are all of you doing with your Omnicabsims?

Got you!!

The Omnicabsim is a fine tool you developed. Mine is always ON.
