NPD: Electronic Audio Experiments Longsword

Yeah Matt! So glad you're digging it! (you're making me miss it more and more....hahaha). It really is the most transparent drive pedal I've ever played. The eq is so well done. I was trying to make it work for higher gain and I just preferred my Rat pedal. I probably should have made it a light/med drive instead. My loss and your gain!

So, I finally had time to determine that it was a bad 18v cable that prevented me from try the Longsword at 18v at my space doom rehearsal. This morning I put a fresh 18v cable on it and Andy (@emjazz) is right - this pedal slays at 18v.

In another thread I was poo pooing the idea of "transparent" overdrives. However, the Longsword is making a believer out of me. At 18v, with the increased headroom, I can dial in a really nice clean drive with only the slightest hint of break-up, then when I kick in the second gain stage, wow... crunch nirvana! I'll try to record and post a demo later today.

FINE I'LL START SAVING FOR ONE

@blindrabbit
I just edited my post to discuss what I think is a noise gate in the circuit.

@emjazz
I also like the rat circuit and also keep one on my board for higher gain needs.

Ooooh, that's very cool. If/when you do make a demo, please try to get that gate effect in there somehow.

So Matt, I know this is apples and oranges to a certain degree, but tell me a bit about the Longsword vs the Volt Thrower, if you can. You are on the VT125 list, right? I'll be especially interested to hear your thoughts once that one comes in.

I'm not on the VT125 list as I've got an OGVT. The VT is on the Dunwich side of the rat spectrum tone wise, and I run my VT through a One Control Mosquito blender, so there is more flavor and clean bottom when I'm using the VT. Both pedals produce killer distortion though. The Longsword also has the ability to sound real nice as a clean drive too, which makes it perhaps more versatile. I also have a ODB, which also does a nice (but flavored) clean drive thing too. So, while I do have some overlap, the Longsword really shines as a transparent OD/distortion and does some things the VT and ODB don't - which is the transparent thing.

Thank you kind sir. :)

Glad you're still digging it - 18V really is a big improvement!

There isn't a noise gate or any sort of gated circuitry in the pedal, so whatever you are hearing likely has to do with some of the weirder artifacts that come from running a hard-clipping op amp distortion at higher gain. I've noticed it with rats, Dist+ type pedals, OCDs, etc. It's just part of the sound.

Thanks John... yes, I'm still digging the longsword. I'm still playing with the internal drive tab, searching for the optimal setting for me and my bass (Fender P). What have you found that works best for bass?

The internal drive trimmer is the same as the external pot. The 1/2 footswitch just goes between them. In other words, it's like a preset for how much gain you want. When we ship them out it's at max so you can always activate a heavy distortion/fuzz sound. I prefer lower gain settings for bass in general but I'm afraid it's too subjective for me to give you something specific.

Got an update to the Longsword coming...

Got the same graphics refresh as everything else in the line, as well as some updates under the hood. Stay tuned?

Yup, now you get the extra headroom automatically. The Boost is like a second channel with more gain and a different, slightly tighter EQ and feel.

Thanks for the kind words Matt. If you have any questions I'm happy to answer!

One thing to note - the internal gain trimmer is a second Drive pot. You can think of it as a preset gain level activated by the left footswitch. Max gain can definitely be pretty overwhelming on bass!

I can't wait for the Longsword or the Dagger with a built in blend. That's on your list right? I think I heard that from Andy.

I have complete dirt pedal fatigue and I have sold quite a few recently that I never thought I would part with. But I would buy an EAE with a blend in a second.

Hey Mos! The one with the blend is called the Claymore. That one should be unreal. :)
