Thanks! The only problem is the OmniCabSim has a momentary switch on it, so it has to be engaged every time I power up. It's a circuit design thing but I'll occasionally forget to turn it on and wonder why my rig suddenly sounds terrible

there are some relay bypass pedals with a momentary click that stay in the state that you left it in when powered down. at least that's how mine are, but others unlatch the relay.

I guess I want to say, that I think its kinda funny how all you guys pretty much worshiped johnK and the pages he's posted to and the pedals he's built, and now it's like you all hate his guts all the sudden. I dont really follow what most you post anymore, just not my thing these days, so I obviously missed something. But its just crazy for me to see that kind of behavior towards him from this group.

If you were to choose a clean bass preamp, how would you differentiate the Mesa Boogie Subway DI with this Southampton Ictineo? Now I'm choosing between the two. Hmm.

I think the main differences would be flavors and the ability to turn one off and on and the other is just on all the time. Even though I leave my Ictineo on at all times, its still nice to know that I can turn it off if I want. But overall, you'd have to decide what type of voice or flavor you'd want. Thats what it would boil down to for me anyway. Because they are essentially the same thing, they just go about doing it differently sonically.

Oh, and the Mesa has the DI of course. The Ictineo does not.

Speaking with the Dan in the OCS thread, the issue is

I included the OFF state when powered because it has resonant filters inside..so if you power it and it´s ON, and you have the resonance control Up, there is a huge OOOOOOMPH while the power capacitors charge (like 100 milliseconds)..I hated that on the prototypes, so i had to make it start on OFF position.

the stomp switch is a momentary spst, so, if you know how to use a soldering iron, you could solder 2 wires to the stompswitch lugs, and with an external switch, you could make a "remote control"

It's really not a huge deal in the scheme of things and I'd rather not monkey with an otherwise gem of a pedal. I'd end up wanting to do it to my B7KU, Cali76B, tuner...lol

Can't describe the flavor, but I know this would drive a power amp like hell. There's so much clean gain on tap it's redonkulous. Between this and the HPF/LPF gain, I think I could get by without an actual power amp

I've never used the Mesa, but just by looking at it, the Mesa obviously has more diverse functionality built in, and a more "standard" EQ arrangement. The Ictineo definitely sounds great though and is tonally versatile in it's own way, and has no problem driving the power amp on my Aguilar Tonehammer.

You can most def drive a power amp with the Ictineo. Its a powerful beast.

To me, the Ictineo is rather tubey in some ways. It has a really nice way about it. The tone and body are more subtle but the voicing switches are really drastic most the time. In a good way mind you. I can't say it sounds like a tube amp, yet it does. Its just a powerful, clean, EQ/voice filled preamp. I can see if working very well in a lot of different situations in different musical genres from say a blues band to a metal or hard rock band.

The Mesa, I'm sure is great, I'm sure has that Mesa flavor. I can't really say though becasue I've never played one. It has some things the Ict doesnt, like a DI, an actual shelved (is that the right terminology) EQ. I dont have a lot of exp with Mesa amps either, but I have played a couple and I wouldnt say they were dark. I would think you could brighten up any amp, especially a Mesa, if you wanted to.

I'd suggest listening to some demos on the Mesa, they are out there. My opinion, unless you need a DI, I would go Ictineo all day. It's really musical and tight sounding, its powerful, has a lot of tonal option and variation. Looks really cool and it has plenty of volume on tap to deafen an elephant. Again, I'm sure the Mesa is nice, but I think the Ictineo has more character. It's also very clean.

The Mesa would be more intuitive to use. The Ictineo does clean very well and many good and useful tweaks from there, but I would call its EQ a tone-shaper, not a full-featured EQ. If you're looking to do things like room correction on the fly, you're likely going to have to look elsewhere for that. It can ABSOLUTELY drive a power amp. No question about that at all, it works quite well.

I was at the same impasse, between the Mesa Subway DI and the Ictineo. I went with the Ictineo since my fifth gear is awesome and I figured I could trust that this other pedal by them would be just as great. I also picked up a Radial DI box since I needed a DI out for my board, and I was replacing my VT bass DI. The combination of the Ictineo with a dedicated DI box works perfectly, and I think that's 99% due to the Ictineo. It's a great tone shaping pedal that is super clean and just makes your bass sound better. And like everyone else has said, it has plenty of volume on tap, so you shouldn't have any issues there.

All that to say, I went with the Ictineo and dedicated DI box over the Subway DI, and couldn't be happier. My tone has never sounded better.

Thanks for the responses. I might need an extra DI out. Does anyone have sound samples of the Ictineo? I can't find one one on the net. Also the Subway DI has few reviews, can't seem to find a lot of audio samples too. Southampton also ships worldwide right? I'm from Asia btw.

The Ictineo is a direct clone of the Zeibek Submarine designer so you could search for demos of that for an accurate sound
