Double Bass NS Design NXT Megathread

Hi- posted this in the other NS thread as well, but...

Does anyone have pictures of the Undercover gig bag, specifically the newer ones with the zippers instead of the velcro? I THINK i tracked one down, but just want to double check. They appear to be pretty rare, or at least elusive (like pokemon ;) ).

Thanks.

Ok so I got impatient and overly curious and put the innovations on the nxt. Why worry about ruining them when they have just been hanging in the closet anyway. Can't play through my regular amp just yet but it seems promising unplugged. I definitely like the feel. Will update after a couple of gigs this week.

The core of the Innovation strings is very robust for a synthetic core string (maybe except the Honeys, they have a different kind of core).
If you want pizz and bowing, use the Innovation Braided and pluck a bit lower than using steel strings.

I've never used any other synthetic string. Just spiros on my acoustic and the stock ns strings on the nxt. I had the rockabilly so on my acoustic for a while but that bass did not play nice with them it seemed.

With the nxt plugged into a gk mb150s this morning the innovations sound pretty nice. Dark, but defined. I have a gig tonight so we will see how it goes.

Ok so a little update. I've used the NXT for a few gigs with the Innovation Rockabilly strings on it. I've previously played the bass with the stock strings and a set of GHS Crossovers. The Rockabillys take the bass right where I want it. I can still hear the character of the instrument but the cut the sustain down a bit(it will still ring an open string out pretty long) and definitely cut down the brightness. They have good depth and to me have a nicely complex sound on this bass. I can make it sound very acoustic when needed and still get a little mwahish growl on solos just by altering technique. I play pizz exclusively except for at home playing scales and other things to keep my ears in check. I can bow these well enough to accomplish that goal.

I'm playing the bass into an LR Bass Para DI, into an Ampeg PF-500 and PF-115 cab. I'm now able to use the tone control on the bass where I previously had it down all the way at all times.

I'm very happy with this combination and have gotten lots of compliments from the other musicians that I play with. The black strings on the black bass looks good too.

So, while tearing down a couple weeks ago, the height adjustment thumbscrew on my NXT stripped out completely.

Emailed NS Designs, and they immediately shipped me a new one - no charge.

Customer service at its finest.

Or significant differences between it and the NXT?

The NXT is built in the czech republic by the same people who build the CR models from what I know, just with less premium parts and materials and without the active pre-amp. The WAV is made in China with the usual cost reducing measurements, but from what I read people are mostly happy with them, you might just need to swap out the tuners.

I spoke to the tech department at ns a while back and I can tell you a couple of things. The new WAV basses are not Chinese. I think maybe Indonesian, not really sure. From what I have heard they will be much more consistent than the old WAV. pure speculation on my part, but I would not be surprised if we see an upgrade to the NXT soon.

New WAVs are indeed made in Indonesia, I believe - definitely not in China. I have a few of the first ones (prototypes) and I can tell you that the fit and finish is very good - they play well and sound and look really good. The finishes are really nicely done, and I particularly dig the white one (solid white - perfect for praise bands!) and the new trans black (black finish over veneer - very slick.) But the amber and red are really nice too.

The new active circuit in the NXT is a no-battery design; you flash charge it (charger included) for 60 seconds and get 18 hours of performance time on the charge. There will also be a "passive mode bypass" in case you forget to charge it before a gig.

It looks like the main purpose of the active upgrade is to change the impedance of the circuit. The rechargeable design may be nifty but I bet they abandon it in favour of a regular battery midway through the release.

Ned's always been kind-of optimistic on how it can be just plugged into a DI and work well. I found that no matter the circumstance, going straight into a board channel gives too thin a sound with way too much string noise. Maybe this little preamp is him quietly admitting that an NXT direct into the board is not optimal.

My thumbscrew stripped out at a gig Saturday morning, I tried a replacement from the hardware store but not holding as well, I'll have to contact them.

My question would be if it still gets the sound of the jack pot when it's in passive mode. I personally never leave that spot. I'm very interested in trying to get ahold of these new electronics to put in my NXT that is now just a couple of months old but I would want to make sure that I could still get the output character that I have now and then have the active part as another option. If it has all of the loading of a standard pot in passive mode then I would see that as a step backward for that part of the setup.
