Double Bass NS Design WAV4 megathread part I

I got the bass just a few hours ago. It feels and sounds great so far. Unfortunately one of the plastic joint pieces in the tripod cracked when I tightened it. Hopefully I can send it to NS and get one of the real tripods for the difference in price.

I got my WAV on wednesday and absolutly love it. I work in a retail music store/Recording studio, where i am an engineer, and we have two URBs, a Brecker student bass, and an older carved Knilling. I was able eto familiarize my self to the UR scale so the transition wasn't quite as traumatic as i assumed it would be. I just have to say thanks to Bob and Mark for taking time to answer all my questions leading to the purchase of this bass. thanks guys

PS if you look back to the begining of this thread it is fun to watch the different trends in discussion. From pre's, to strings, to stands, back to pre's, etc.

Hi just wanna any owner of the Wav4 travel with it by flight before?

Does it really fit in the overhead compartment as described in the brouchure?

I bought a Palatino EUB 2 years ago and ended up finding a hardcase for it coz I can't hand carry it to the plane. It's too long to put into the overhead compartment. So it lost the purpose for travelling sake actually.:hmm:

I'm curious what someone who has spent a lot of time on DB thinks about the WAV4. I like playing my upright, an Engelhart EM4, but I haven't played a gig on it in ages. The bow tone on it sucks (which admittedly is more my fault than anything) and I've always been more of a jazz guy anyways, so since I got out of university symphony the bow has really been just a "end of ballad" kind of thing for me.

So I guess my thought is that for what I do on upright (record, play a little bit of jazz and rock, and dink around at home) an EUB would be nicer as it would take up a lot less space (which might be important soon as I'm contemplating moving) and I'd be able to practice it without bothering the whole house.

Coming from a "real" upright is the WAV4 going to be a suitable replacement? Would I be able to play a jazz gig on it without sounding like a doof? Or should I go with a CR4 or something?

I wouldn't say the G sound much different to the other strings but I would agree about the sustain, it is marginal though and to be honest I hadn't really noticed it until you mentioned it.

Thanks for the input on the G string. I agree about the sustain. It may be a matter of EQ. I did raise the bridge when I got the bass because it was too low and the string bottomed out around the "15th fret." But with a piezo I guess there is no "distance from the pickup," so it shouldn't matter. I'll wait till the regular soundman is back and see what's up. The sub soundman is just terrible -- I run my Lakland 55-94 flat through a BassBone when the regular guy is on, but when the sub comes in, I have to switch to Channel 2 and re-EQ. So I imagine that the same applies to the WAV.

Just now I was taking a break from practicing on my WAV. I was sitting at my desk holding the bass by the base of the neck. When I saw that it was tilting towards me, I realized that the top piece of the tripod had snapped in two. This was one of the few metal parts of the tripod, not one of the plastic.

Definitely getting the "real" tripod now.

Regarding what regular DBers think of the bass, one of my teachers today tried it out after I finished my midterm. He said that it was the only EUB besides his custom made bass that he felt played well and sounded good. My other teacher (primarily EBG) had a blast for the few minutes he got to play it. I also had a blast while I got to play his Fodera. :bassist:

Just a minute ago i was tighten the screw that anchors the body to the stand and the threads started slipping over each other. i wasn'e even tightening it down really hard. now since the threads are messed up the bass won't tighten to the stand and keeps leaning to the sides more and more. any ideas? would this be covered in the warrantee?

That's exactly what happened to my stand just a few days after I got it. When I examined the broken parts there was a significant void in the cast metal, clearly a manufacturing defect, do you see the same thing?

To give them credit NS arranged for a new stand to be shipped to me from the Czech Republic and I had it within a few days. So far the new one is fine, but it has left me with a bit of doubt about its long term reliability. NS and the guy in the Czech Republic put it down to a 'one off' fault but to hear someone else have exactly the same problem makes me even more concerned.

You might want to look into using the top portion of your wav stand with the lower part of a drum tripod/stand. Although HEAVY DUTY, thats basically all the CR/EU series stands are. Just a longer leg behind the bass for stability.

Let me know if you'd like the tube diameter for the top part of the CR stand.

Its the top part that is the problem, not the base so drum stand isn't the answer. I think the problem lies with the top metal piece being a low quality cast material.
