Double Bass NS Design WAV4 megathread part I

Well, I too play fretless, but my MIM Jazz has the lines on the neck, so...
Really, it's not too bad, as long as you L-I-S-T-E-N when you play, something that you can get out of the habit of if you're not careful!
It MIGHT be a vision problem, by which I mean you MIGHT not be taking the perspective of your line of sight into account as you look further down (directionally) along the neck.
As Illbay says, it could be to do with the distorted perspective you get looking at these markers from an angle. Another thing I've found is that as you raise and/or lower the height of the strings, the position dots can become more (or less) accurate with respect to the true note. So I suspect the dots are in a kindof compromise position, and will probably never be totally true, no matter what you do.
It's not really a big deal ultimately - as your playing develops, the dots tend to serve as a guide to position rather than a totally accurate place upon which to place your finger.

I finally got around to taking my stand back for replacement - I had for about 6 months been using a spanner to adjust the stand (10mm metric hex nut on top and 12mm metric bolt on the bottom) and they 'allowed' me to upgrade to the 'CR' stand (with an appropriate contribution on my part). The appropriate contibution $AUD 280 ($430 RRP minus $50 Discount minus $100 for the Wav stand) was a bit high and probably hasn't been adjusted for the currently high Aussie Dollar.
However the stands are chalk and cheese the 'CR' stand weighs about 3 times as much as the WAV stand and has no shakes or rattles - It's built like the proverbial battleship.
I think this was money very well spent

What does this phrase actually mean? I dig it. I could see using it as a lyric. I could also see explaining it after every gig.
Hi, well in fact I'm very confused and have to confess that my problem was simply that the bass wasn't really in tune. I had first tried to tune it up quickly a few days ago by ear, and didn't check with a proper tuner. I did it last night and now the markers seem to be about where they should be.

Not to worry - after a few weeks you'll no doubt want to raise the string height, the dots will magically shift position, and you'll find yourself back in that all too familiar state of confusion

Well, it's already not as easy to play as my Lakland bass guitar, so I'll try to strengthen my hands before raising the strings height.

FWIW: I hate naming a band. You start of trying to be clever and end up nondescript - everyone has a "too clever by half" name.
But I want this one for my two-man project, because it actually fits my partner and me: We are, literally, similar in appearance but as different in reality as can be.
(He doesn't realize that HE'S the chalk and I'M the cheese, and I'm not gonna tell him...)

hello, have not posted much. Got my wav4 a little over a year ago on a sub zero day via ups. Fingerboard cracked immediately overnight. Had it fixed here in Madison by Vince of Doublebass workshop for $50. Now it has a nice scar.
Used it for a few jobs, one: a musical w/ violin , piano and bass where we were on stage w/ the actors. Sounded solid thru my yamaha bbt500-110 combo. Very cool look in performance. My home practice rig...Line 6 studio 110 w/ eminence delta-light 8 ohm neo speaker. Previous speaker went bad so I thru this neo in and sounds better, tighter and louder.
Got the nicer stand from Bob Gollihur, quite the improvement as well as a new case from Bass Central in Florida.

I just put one on layaway. It doesn't have a stand at all. The original stand broke in shipping to the store.

FWIW I'd recommend strongly against the wav4 stand, they live short lives. I personally like the endpin stand. Or, go with one of the eu series tripod stand.

+1 on the Fishman Platinum Pro Bass Preamp/EQ/DI for the WAV4. Its essential for optimum tone and performance. I also used an XOTIC RC Booster pedal that I velcroed to the back of the bass for use as an onboard preamp if you will to boost the signal in between the bass and the Fishman. This yielded great tone. I now have the CR-4M which is 18volts active and doesnt need the boost. I still use the Fishman for the EQ and compression, and the depth function. Finally, a little wedge of good quality foam, like memory foam under the strings at the bridge will give you a more upright bass-like decay. I use this in the studio mostly because live, its too hard to take it out and put it back in.
I didn't think it was right to give him the problem of the stand if I didn't buy the bass from him. I bought it from my local GC, but they are utterly without clue about replacing it. On the other hand they gave me a good price. $575 (without any stand).

They were extremely prompt when one of the tuners on my wav4 broke. And, I met David (from NS) at NAMM, he's a good guy. You may want to cc info@... as well in case David is traveling or on vacation or whatever.
That said, I still recommend against the wav4 stand. Perhaps they'll let you upgrade to a better stand and give you a discount for the broken wav4 stand. Dunno.

I'll also need to read back through this endless megathread to see if there was ever a consensus on the best strings to make it sound more DB-ish and less 'large BG'-ish that will fit easily.

I had Flexocor's on mine. Worked pretty well. I think that's one of the primary suggested strings.
