As far as setup goes, you should do whatever feels comfortable and gets you the sound you want. My strings are set relatively low from the nut to the end of the fingerboard. I had to tweak the truss rod in order to achieve the lower string height at the "12th fret" marker.

The magnetic pickups should be positioned so that each string is balanced in output when you're soloing the magnetic pickups... unless you want the D string to be significantly louder than the E for some reason.

I'd agree with Pat on setup. If you want a DBish sound then you would be better to lift the height of the strings as high as is comfortable for you to play. There is no set height. The bridge is very easy to adjust. Use an allen wrench, putting it in the two holes on the back just behind the bridge. I have my G string set lower than the E string.

If you want a Fretless mwah then keep the strings quite low.

Play around with it and find what works for you.

These are great instruments for tweaking. If you're looking for something close-ish to an acoustic upright sound, then add more piezo to the mix, raise the strings a little, and while we're on the subject of strings, I'd be inclined not to use the stock ones -- Spiro weichs seem to perform very well on this bass.

Amplification is also important, but likely a different topic.

Hi Everybody,

I've owned a NS CR4M a year ago, I'm missing it and I'd like to buy myself a new one, this time without magnetic pups (never used them). I 've had the chance to play an NXT and I've found the neck had a different thickness, especially at the lower registers, thus I was wondering about the neck differences between NXT and CR before buying again. The producer's website doesn't mention any relevant difference upon necks, so here is my question. Does the NXT has a D neck and the CR an open-C neck, like I feel, or I'm missing something?

I'm not sure about the difference in the necks but if you can afford to get the CR-4T instead of the NXT you'll get a better stand and a blend/mix knob for Arco to Pizz for the piezo bridge pickup instead of the NXT's Arco/Pizz Switch where you get either/or as far as sound. That's worth the price of admission right there! Huge variance of sound with the blend knob.

I just got a CR4m and really like it so far. I'm curious if anyone has found a good alternative tripod stand? I found that when I pull hard on the strings the bass tends to move around a lot. Maybe I'm still getting used to playing the thing and will learn to play lighter, but at any rate, do let me know if you've got any ideas.

Yes, I find the end pin stand far better in that aspect. I own both stands and almost never use the tripod because of what you just stated. My tripod is now just a dock for the endpin. Check it out on their website.

Just a quick note in case any NS owners have need to hang their bass on a wall for any reason, say to put out of the way of little ones.

Ive just installed a String Swing padded accessory hook, 6" version on my wall, and it works perfectly to hang from the open headstock with enough extra in front to hang the bow too. I wrote them asking for picky specs and they answered promptly and nicely.

And the baseplates come in white too.

Never thought of that, but my kids are gone and getting married and I think having babies! My NS lives usually on it's stand, or in it's Undercover Cases bag. But that is a good presentation idea and practical storage too. I like that.

Any link on the manufacturer?

I have a buddy that has 15+ guitars and most of them are hanging on his walls! Looks great.

I just got my NXT 4 and a set of NS Traditional strings yesterday, so you may want to take my opinion with a grain of salt. When ordering the NXT 4, I decided I would start off with the NS Traditionals and keep the original strings as backup. The original strings had that “new string” sound. A bright attack with good sustain. Even a little bit of growl from the strings. A nice sound if that’s what you are after.

I decided to stand by my initial decision to put on the NS Traditionals. These are considerable larger gauge strings. The string tension is tighter, as expected based on the larger string gauge and the string tension charts on D’Addario website. The Traditionals do have a much rounder sound. There is less sustain, most notable on the E and A strings. One of the most pleasing changes was the increased percussive “thump” when plucked, instead of the brighter “new string” attack from the original strings that came on the NXT 4.

They are harder on the left hand than the original strings, but that is one reason why I wanted to change the strings right at the beginning. Over all, I am glad I made the change.

Ill second the move to Traditionals.

Just finished the install. My EU6 might be a weird bird regarding string length, but i had to put spacers behind the anchors of the B and E to keep the thick wind from starting around the post. Brass #10 washers like the ones already installed ina stack works like a charm. The more common 4s and 5s have more distance between nut and tuner for these strings. Pics in a bit.

I just played my NS CR-4T for the first time in like a month.....standing across from my bed is my Buddy's mid 50's Epiphone blondie upright that I have to babysit for a few more months. Been playing that several times a day and when I played. The NS today, you were right on with the assessment of the regular stings. Way easier action, more sustain, and a nice growl. The dots help a lot more than I thought!

Does anyone have a problem with the neck mount coming loose while playing after a while. It's like I need to grab a pair of vise grips and crank it way down. Are there supposed to be any washers on that connection? I got mine used and I never had anything there. Just wondering. Lemme know.

It the connection between the back of the bass mount and the stand interface. It's metal on metal. The back of the bass has the flat plate with the threaded hole and the stand has the flat plate with the thumb screw bolt. I have to stand on the side like I'm playing and tighten as I pull the neck to me as I'm tightening and keep cranking back and forth like I'm reeling in a fish. Seems if there were some compressable washer it would tighten and stay tightened as I play. As it is, it keeps loosening up more and more.
