Oddball Fenders.

Precision A/E were of the MIJ era and sold in the early 90's for a few years. Fender Japan part number was PBAC-100 (fretted) and PBAC-100FL (fretless). Semi hollow mahogany body, spruce top, "A" width neck with microtilt adjustment. Piezo bridge, Lace Sensor split pickup with active circuitry. Three knobs for: volume, tone and blend. They were offered in natural and sunburst finishes.

Just picked up a rare USA (not Japan) Fender HM circa 1990 in mint condition. Will post photos, soon. In addition, I have an old (1985?) MIJ Precision Lyte Deluxe, as was shown in earlier photos.

Both basses weigh around 7.5 lbs. The Fender HM is passive with three jazz pickups, a 5-way PuP selector switch, a volume and a detented tone knob (both numbered speed knobs with rubberized grip rings), an older Schaller high mass bridge (like the P Lyte Deluxe bridge, but with no string-through body option, and a basswood body. The satin-finished neck has a rosewood fretboard with clay dot inlays and is a 7.25" radius, 1.5" @ nut jazz neck with a graphite nut. It has black, mini schaller, locking tuning machines. The bolt-on neck has a plate with four screws and a tilt-neck adjustment option. The action can get low (just like with the P-Lyte).

It would be nice to be able to collect light weight Fenders (<8 lbs) with the 7.25" Jazz neck, but I don't know of many models that had this characteristic, and I don't really need the regular Precision Lyte at this point. I suppose there's always the Aerodyne to consider, or an 8lb jazz to locate on some rack, somewhere.....

Any suggestions for light weight options are appreciated.

I think that's the first HM I've ever seen on here. Definitely hang onto that one! The three jazz pickups are so cool. And if it's lightweight, that's a big plus!

I certainly would like to see the Jazz Bass Plus being re-introduced. The ones here are so pretty.

For some reason I remember the fretted ones as having a pointy headstock and shark tooth inlays, while the fretless ones had a standard headstock. Am I just going crazy?

I don't have this Jazz Special anymore, but it was a cool bass! The bass was gutted when I bought it - just a neck and body - so I had some Basslines put in, as well as Gotoh tuners, Schaller bridge and some chrome knobs to complete the look.

1994 MIA Jazz Bass Plus... This used to have that Kubicki 2-band pre and Fender Lace Sensors, but then I gutted it and put Marcus Mille Jazzes and an Aguilar OBP-1... It was a tad noisey...

...More recently, took the MM J's out, gave the OBP-1 away and made it passive with Nordstrand Split J's and VVT.

That is sweet.

You're thinking of the Fender HMT bass. Same body, pup and electronics as the A/E but a different neck.

I misquoted on the neck radius of the Fender HM--it is 9.25".

So this is actually a mandolin, i would tune it EADG and play bass on it though , i never knew fender use to make one of these i really want one

They also made an electric (solid body, I believe) violin, IIRC.
