4. I played in locally successful rock cover & funk bands since '63 - was full-time until '78 and almost full-time until '82/'83. Since then it's been church worship teams for 20+ years and my 'geezer' rock band for the last four years... GREAT FUN!

10 years ago was jamming at a friend's house. He on guitar, me on flute (been playing 30 years). He had a mid 70s RIC, so I asked to give it a go. Hook, line, and sinker. Bought a bass the next day.

4. I started playing in my mid-teens, mid-70's. I've had lessons here and there, but am mostly self-taught, learning songs by ear. It was never my goal to make music a career: I love my day job in IT, and also being a weekend warrior. I play 50-60 paying gigs per year, many different flavors of rock: modern, classic, alternative, r&b, blues, country, punk, funk, whatever else is offered. After decades of four-banging, I switched to five string in Y2K.

Pixies:

My first bass is on the right, medium-scale Guild EB-3 wannabe, exact model unknown. Amp is Acoustic 150/301 stack. The little Ampeg combo is also mine.

4. Share A Little of Your Bass Playing History: Played upright bass in Jr High and High School orchestra, 1962-1968. Played in a local big band through 1973, then graduated from college, moved away and didn't get my gear back from storage until 1996. Started playing again and now play in a surf and classic rock band.

2) I have shoes older than you, ya whippersnapper.

3&4) Started playing at age 12, after finding out the Farfisa organ I wanted cost $400 and a pawnshop bass and practice amp was $120.
After 6 months of horrible tone and very sore fingers, bought my friend's Kalamazoo bass for $30, and a blackface Bassman with 2x12 cabinet for $125.
A year later I sold the Kalamazoo for $50, and spent $135 on a used 1970 Telecaster bass. I pulled the frets, added hand carved graduated width walnut fret inlays. Also stripped, contoured and slightly reshaped the body, then refinished it with Ultraspar Marine varnish. I still have it, but rarely play it.

These days I mostly play Fenders and Laklands, but have Gibsons, a Ric, a couple of Musicmans, a Hayman 40/40, a Line 6 variax 700 and a big pile of various amps. Strictly a weekend warrior, bar gigs, parties, benefits and we're recorded a few songs and put them on itunes & the web.

With the 2003 Fender Roscoe Beck IV. Very versatile live and great in the studio.

1995 Lakland 4-94. Sounds fantastic recorded. Neck feels like a great old P bass neck. Using the Sunn 300T w/ Musicman HD 2x10 and 2x12 cabs. Punchy thunder.

2005 Musicman Sterling. Buttercream with H/S pickups. Lots of tones in there, all of them good. The lightest feeling 10lb bass ever.

My absolute comfy old shoe favorite bass, a '70 P body with added Jazz PU, '66 Jazz neck and old TI Jazz Rounds. 8lbs of blues joy.
Venturing into uncharted territory above the 12th fret.

3) Started guitar and bass lessons at 13--the same week I joined my first band. That band lasted all through Jr. and Sr. high school. Here's the only photo I can find with my very first bass (a Teisco short scale!)--it's from 1965 and we were playing a Bar Mitzvah (seriously!):

Played on and off (more off than on) through most of my adult life, and like a lot of us, got serious again about 5 years ago. Currently play in two local bands, plus there is a yearly weekend get-together (2 days of rehearsal and then an afternoon concert for relatives, neighbors and old friends) back in my home town with that very same group of guys from childhood. This is from last year's gathering (as you can see, we're more casual now!):

Started on guitar after seeing A Hard days Night
I bought my first bass and amp when I was 16

Traded it later that year for a japanese Epiphone 335/casino looking guitar...traded that a couple of years later for a mahogany 66 Epiphone Cabbalero, which I still have. In my early 20's I bought a brand new rick 480 and shortly thereafter (upon a friends recomendation that if I picked up bass I'd always be in a band...and he was right!) I traded the rick for a 76 sunburst precision:

Which I played semi professionally for years along with my gibson sb400...toured the midwest and NE opened for lots of punk and hard rock bands...the original AC/DC, Ramones, David Johansen, The Dead Boys, B 52's ect.....got divorced and moved to LA for a couple of years still playing hard rock...got sick of LA and moved back to the south where I changed directions and started playing in a blues band...been playing the blues ever since, although I did get to tour England with an Americana band.
My greatest memories are hanging out and partying with all of those characters and going with my drummer to Abbey Road on Boxing day while in England and getting a 2 hour studio tour and generally chatting with Dave who showed us around the historic old studio where the Beatles and Pink Floyd among many others recorded some of the greatest music in history. Here's my little stable of basses:
