C'mon, Mike, the trap has got to go and Laviolette is putting and end to it. Tampa's is worst than most. One guy way back defending the net? That's the goaltender's job. Bring that guy up. SOMEBODY PUHLEASE FORECHECK for Tampa!!!

You're right, it has to go. But having your players standing in their own zone doing nothing is crap too. I didn't tune this game in to watch the coaches egos.
If you want to bust that trap, you attack it and make the other team pay for playing it.

Wings score 6 goals in 6 games followed by ten goals in two games, go figure. It's early so I'm far from worried.
It worked effectively and the Flyers got some good chances off of it. Tampa couldn't defend the rush.
We'll see if Tamps sets up again this period.

Coming off my haitus from TB to talk about this Tampa Bay trap BS.
Kudos to Laviolette for coming up with a solid defensive scheme against a 1-3-1 Forecheck (and I'm being dead serious and make no mistake,...1-3-1 is a forecheck,...not a defensive system).
If Guy Boucher want's to play lazy chicken **** hockey,...I'm all for the; "okay you want the puck,...come and get it cause we aren't just going to give it to you" attitude that Laviolette employed. If the forechecker isn't going to pursue the puck,...then why should a defender feel especially compelled to pass the puck into coverage?
If I were a TB fan in those stands and spent a bunch of money to watch my favorite players stand around,...I'd be pissed. The fact of the matter is that Boucher has employed an opportunistic forecheck. Rather than pursuing the puck, pressuring defencemen...winning battles and you know,...playing hockey,...he's just waiting for the other team to cough the puck up and generate the rush from the neutral zone.
There is nothing in the rule book that says that Laviolette has to force his defencemen to pass the puck into coverage,...I mean you've got four guys covering 3 forwards,...what's defenses supposed to do? So Lavy's defense against 1-3-1 is textbook IMO. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Laviolette is a genius.
I don't think there is any ego involved,...Boucher is a mediocre coach resorting to unsportsmanlike tactics that brought him some success last year. Why should Lavy get wrapped up in that. Why wouldn't Lavy employ a strong defensive system against those tactics. Had the Flyers gone with a different game plan that the fans would prefer,...we'd be on here going,...DOH too many turnovers cost the Flyers that one.
At one point I was laughing at Tampa Bay. They may have gotten the extra point,...and that will probably only reinforce Boucher's commitment to borderline cheating (yes I know there were no rules broken,..but you know the league is going to have a look at this) but they Tampa Bay oughta be embarrassed in the manner in which they won that game.
I think a lot of the disconnect is that people are identifying the trap as a defensive scheme and while yes it does protect the defensive zone,...I consider it to be more of a passive forecheck. Like if you had two guys down low pressuring the puck carrier and trying to force a turnover in the offensive zone (IE 2-1-2),...the only difference is with 1-3-1 you are attempting to force the turn over and generate the rush from the Neutral Zone.

The Bruins have played 3 strong games in a row - creating chances starting with the defense and actually finishing them. The first line has come alive over the past few weeks while the second line Marchand-Bergeron-Seguin has been strong all year. They are almost more like a 1-A and 1-B line which gives opposing coaches problems in figuring which one to put their shutdown D against.
I'm looking forward to tonight's game against the Oilers who have a few exciting young players themselves.

What got me late in that Tampa game was the bad acting. C'mon St. Louis! You can fake a fall better than that! The number of Tampa players falling to the ice was becoming unreal. When St. Louis jumped backwards over Timonen's stick, there was another Bolt lying on the ice in the left wing circle!

Another Bruins win, but the Oilers are for real. The Bruins jumped out to a 2 goal lead early in the 1st, then the Oilers scored 2 to tie. Bruins got 2 more in the second, but each time had plenty of chances. Oilers worked hard in the third and scored to make it a 4-3 game with almost 5 minutes left. Two late goals by the Bruins made the score look more lopsided than the game really was. The Oilers played hard for the full 60 and they have some fast skilled players.
This is the first time that Tuuka Rask started in goal for the B's in back to back games. Thomas will start against Buffalo. They have been running Thomas out there a little more often than they probably wanted to at the beginning of the year when the offense was terrible and the only hope for a point was a shutout.

Rangers pick up another win for six in a row, hopefully we can stay on this hot streak.

Sean Avery picked up a goal on a breakaway tonight and he seems to be a fan favorite at MSG. He brought some excitement to the game, drew penalties, played fairly smart... but still, he's Sean Avery. Either way, ever since he was called back up, fans have been into it. Definitely a love/hate thing going on for me (mostly hate).
Lundqvist has been strong all season, and now with the team's offense behind him he can really shine. Dan Girardi has to be one of the more underrated defenseman. With Staal indefinitely out from that concussion due to Eric Staal, Girardi has been playing at the top of his game.
Big game for us on Tuesday against the Islanders. Our first meeting of the season they got the best of us. It'll be an interesting game considering the streak we've been on.

Sticks and Stones is on Comcast Sportsnet, not NESN. But yes, it's a great show. Felgie may be a DB, but he knows and loves his hockey. And he's rarely unwilling to take the crap he often deserves. I listen to Felger and Mazz every drive-home from work. Makes even Boston traffic fun.
