Official 2011-2012 NHL Regular Season Thread; Puck Drop

There seemed to gripes about Talbot when the Flyers signed him,....his being a former Penguin and what not,...but I am sure enjoying watching him play. I think he is one of those players where you hate em when he's on the other team,...but you definitely want him on your side.

I knew he would be a good addition to the PK and be a good versatile role player,...but I certainly didn't expect him to have the offensive numbers he's put up thus far.

The Flyers are full of surprises this season.

The rookie line of Harry Z, Zac Rinaldo and Sean Coulturier is playing their shutdown role really well and in their game against the Canes,...they had an excellent forecheck and a really energetic offensive zone presence.

The 25 year old free agent rookie out of Bimidji State Matt Read. Holy Crap how did they find this kid?

I've seen some grumbling with Andreas Lilja,...but I feel like a few mistakes aside he is getting better and finding his way into the Defensive scheme well. He has made some solid plays over the last few games and is quietly impressing me.

And don't forget Jagr. ay-yi-yi.... I thoguht the Flyers would be doing good this year, but I'm surprised at what they've managed so far. Laviolette's trust in Couturier on the PK is amazing. He's even out there down 2 men! And there were grumblings on the Flyers boards about Read being another college bum like they've signed in the past. Don't know how they found him, but... I like him!

RE: Jagr. What an asset. I think with him management is sending a clear message that work ethic is the most valued quality in a player. I think that work ethic was lost somewhere along the line (right around the Christmas Break last season) and what is making this team successful is the fact that they have returned to that work ethic.

The media (mainly CSNPhilly) likes to make a big deal about Jagr's late night workouts (and for good reason). The fact that he has his own set of keys to the practice facility in Voorhees and that he goes and skates and works out when most people his age would be ready for bed.

That sort of going above and beyond what's expected is not something you can teach young guys like Giroux and Coulturier. They need to see the example set by a guy who has that mindset innate in his character (and to be honest,...it's a slight inspiration for me to continue to excel at my own work ethic and do what I can to make my co-worker's lives easier).

I think Jagr will continue to be successful with the Flyers. He may not put up as big a numbers as he did when he was with the Pens,...but just his presence and stability in the locker room and his work ethic are hugely valuable to this young team.

Back to stats. Giroux is second in points (Tied with Vanek and Daniel Sedin) behind Phil Kessel. He is third in goals (Tied with Vanek and Seguin and probably more) behind Kessel and Neal.

This is territory that was occupied by Jeff Carter (who has been sidelined most of this season) in years past.

I'll take my lumps.

Just seems that the more traditional hockey markets are better represented here than the less traditional teams.

Fix'd

Until they realign the league the Jets are still really the Thrashers; an Eastern Conference Team all alone in a Western Conference City.

Next year will probably feel more like the Jets are the Jets and they can start to develop WC rivalries.

Did you guys vote for the All Star game starting line up yet?

Fair enough from an outsider's perspective,...but I feel for their travel schedule (which in reality may be easier then if they were a Western Conference team provided they don't play a lot of back to back home and away games).

Apparently, they are only travelling 900 klicks more this year than the Thrashers did last year & they are ranked 10th or something in the league for distance travelled. I assumed they'd be worn ragged too, but apprently that isn't the case at all.

Wings are still griping about travel and will be until the league does something about it.

In the mean time, Holmgren is quoted in the Philly papers as saying that Philadelphia and Pittsburgh will remain in the same division no matter what the NHL wants to do with the realignment. He wants to keep it that way.

Watched the Devils/Sabres game tonight... Brodeur had a ridiculous save on what should have been an easy goal by Pominville. Look for it on nhl.com tomorrow; it'll be one of their featured videos, no doubt. He still looks like he could play another 3-4 years at least.

Caps play the Jets tomorrow night, and they need a victory. After that insane 7-0 start, the Caps are just 4-5-1 in their last 10. Would be nice to see a few more wins trickle into their record...

Marty can still play, but has to be at a reduced load. I didn't watch any hockey last night, but the box score shows he did the job last night. Will have to look for that save. He does make spectacular ones.

Oh, wow, looking at that same box score, Enroth with a .737 save percentage. They really pulled him with under 8 mnutes to go in the third? At that point, why? It wasn't even right after a goal and they were down 5-2.

I still pick Marty every year in my hockey pool, he gets a bunch of wins as long as he stays healthy. He just can't play 78 games a year anymore.
