Official 2011-2012 NHL Regular Season Thread; Puck Drop

Saturdays Game against the Kings will be interesting as it sees the return of former captain and part of the "future of the Flyers" Mike Richards. He had a lot of supporter in Philly as well as a lot of detractors. There will be some cheers when he hits the ice,...and there will be some boos for sure.

I think he goes to LA more motivated and gains back a lot of a lost work ethic as a result of being traded and split up from Jeff Carter, so I think it is probably one of the best things to happen to him in his career.

Hopefully he doesn't come in on Saturday and score a hat trick (Gordie Howe or otherwise).

While I feel what Laich has to say about being Nanny'd by the league,...concussions are such a mis-understood injury by sports doctors that I support what the league is attempting to do. Concussions are not something you should mess with and erring on the side of caution is the prudent thing for the league to be doing. I think this is really a knee-jerk reaction from Laich

While I don't know the ins and outs of IR as far as cap hits and contracts go; If a player has been out as long as Crosby has, the team still has to pay his contract and they aren't getting any return on the payment.

At the same time Crosby isn't contributing to the team. Isn't seen by a fan base that is growing and in all actuality, may not ever be the same player he was at a time when he should be in the prime of his career.

Roenick went off about Crosby the other night, so you can definitely feel the tension rising around the league. Let's not forget that Savard's career is over and Mark Staal is out right now because of concussion issues just to name a couple others. While it sucks that Crosby is out and he is getting all this attention, it is good for player safety overall. It had to happen to someone of his stature for the changes we have seen to come about.

I have no problems with the NHL's current approach to head injuries, but I'm sure it would bother me if I was a player. If Laich gets popped in the head, he'll be thankful later in life people care enough about him to make him sit out and recover.

What did JR say about Crosby?

I only used Crosby as an example cause he has been out for 9 months (maybe he's pregnant? :P Okay ten months).

The thing is if a player stays healthy and has a career as long as Pronger's,...Lidstrom's,...or Jagr's having to sit out the rest of one game in an 82 game season in a potentially 10+ year career is a little short sited.

Maybe Laich was upset that Beagle wasn't allowed to retake the ice to exact revenge on Asham (whether or not he would've been successful is arguable) and he didn't want to say so in so many words.

Just finishing up Saturday's LAK@PHI game.

Flyers are turning pucks over too often. Gotta get that squared away. They are also taking too many penalties.

I'm glad they got the point but that was sorta a slow special teams game.

Richards gets the helper on the GW goal in OT on his first visit to his old team.

As far as head injuries go, I have had a major concussion and it is not fun recovering from it. I think the leagues stance on it and, in particular, Shanahan's stance is fantastic and one of the best things for the league. Also, I used to be in favour of keeping fighting in the league, but with the current research and recent happenings, not to mention the leagues stance on head shots, I would like to see them get rid of it along with no touch icing for next season.

I also think that suspensions should work like this. You hit someone in the head, 3 game suspension PLUS the amount of games that the other person is out, AND the salary that you forfeit goes to the other player. For example, you hit a guy, three games, he is out one game because of it, your suspension is now 4 games. He can never play again? Well, that will give you lots of time to think about your stupid mistake. It may sound harsh, but when you are messing with someones brain, you can't take it too easy.

I like the idea the guys on NHLN floated out there, and I think a few around here suggested it. When you lose a player to a suspension, you also lose the roster spot.

Pittsburgh makes a stop in Winnipeg tonight. I'm really looking forward to this game, even without Crosby, Malkin, Orpik, and Jeffrey. It's a homecoming of sorts for Asham. I believe he is from the Winnipeg area. But hey, that whole "area" is HUGE, so maybe I could say I am from the Winnipeg "area". :D

The Flyers hit the ground running for the first part of the 1st period,...but I think the Rinaldo hit on Doughty woke up a road weary team that was eventually able to level the field.

I'm glad to see the PP show signs of cohesion,...but when you give the opposition all that opportunity on PPs of their own,...you are gonna get burned.

Yes, I am embarrassed by the opening goal in the Pens/Jets game last night. I'm fairly certain even I could have scored on that play. I'm not panicking yet, but the mental lapses and lack of discipline for stretches at a time are just a little concerning to me.

We did watch the Ducks/Sharks, and that was a fun one. Selanne with the game winner!!!

Ben Eager finally got to play for the Oilers last night, that was good to see. The Oilers are a fun team to watch.
