Official 2011-2012 NHL Regular Season Thread; Second Period

Ouch, to the Canucks has to hurt. Bummer deal, but definitely a fun ride. When was the last time Detroit lost at home? Something like 1989? :)

Seems like it. It was Nov 3, 2011.

One other point this team is good without Datsyuk but not great. The play of the best player in the game today was missed especially agains the Sedins. Detroits best line last night was the fourth line.

Datsyuk should be a lock for the Hart. No one in the league right now is as good on both ends of the ice. And it looks like Quincy will be a nice pick up. I still think the Wings may make a move if the right deal comes along.

I love it in any sport when the historically good teams continue to dominate. Watching the Wings kick butt year after year is great to me.

Datsyuk is such a treat to watch. So is Z.....Homlstrom, Franzen, Kronwall...on and on. I don't like seeing Babcock with all that gum in his mouth though. He must own stock in Wrigley. :)

So, in a surprise trade, we send PK and FO specialist Jerred Smithson to Florida for a 6th round pick and future considerations. I think this has a lot to do with roster space since we are getting Hornqvist back and Smitty is a one way guy. We have a nice team built, shame to see someone go, but hopefully this clears room for a big deal or a deep cup run.

The Flyers haven't won back to backs since January. This season is turning into a disappointment. Bryz is making it harder and harder for me to be in his corner. He can make these difficult saves just to let a soft goal in. Seriously,...I thought this guy was supposed to be one of the NHL's elite goaltenders. He looks painfully average to me.

Lightning now have tons of 2nd rounders. Do these picks often materialize into anything? Or is it like the NBA where if you are out of the top 10 you're getting a role player?

Nine of the current players on the Lightning were undrafted. As I am watching the game, the Pens announcer just pointed this out. They were talking about the breakaway from Trevor Smith, and how he was undrafted.

So true. Big disappointment. And don't forget about Danny Briere. I've always loved Briere, but he has been woefully unproductive of late. You're exactly right about Bryzgalov. He'll make an amazing save, then give up two softies. No confidence, no consistency. "Painfully average" just might be a tad generous when considering what Holmgren THOUGHT he was getting. But then again, the Flyers have been breaking my heart since 1976. After their 2nd Cup, I think they've been to the finals without winning more than any other team...

Watching the Pens-Lightning game today was a blast. Malkin showed today why he is the best guy in the league hands down. To deal with the adversity that he, and the Pens, have had and to still produce that way is just amazing. He is mindblowing good.
