I agree with you about Downie being worth more than a late 1st round pick, however I feel Quincey is worth more than Downie.

I agree with you about Downie being worth more than a late 1st round pick, however I feel Quincey is worth more than Downie.
No one really won this deal.
Detroit payed a first round pick for a guy they put on waivers years ago and will be at best their 5th D man.
Tampa got a late first for a guy who is worth more and is the franchise player's best friend. Also Quincey would have helped a horrible D.
And the Avs got less value for Quincey and indirectly gave him to the Wings.
But Detroit is in win now mode and could care less about that pick.
If Yzerman packages these picks for a franchise young goalie (Schneider,Bob) he will have succeeded.
And if this gets the Avs to the playoffs who cares about losing an above average D man.
Downie's a forward not a D.

What a game in Pittsburgh. I haven't seen the Pens defense play that well for some time. Malkin is still the best player in the NHL right now, and Fleury made some amazing plays. It's all coming together.
Oh yeah....the Neal deal for six years. I like it on the surface, but I think it will force Shero to unload some salary. Maybe Paul Martin.

To me? My above average D man was Quincey, not Downie. If you weren't talking about my post then my bad.
Preds win number 2 in a row with Hal Gill in the line-up. We dominated the Cannucks this season and hopefully that will carry over to the playoffs. Good wins over good teams is a sure fire sign that the team has grown up and is ready for the offseason. The youngsters played well and we rang several off the post. The game could've easily ended 6-7 to 1 with a bounce or two more our way.
I think Detroit over-payed, Tampa got a first for an average player, and Colorado indirectly helped to make the WC tougher for themselves.

Lest I forget from tonights Pens game....Fleury tied Tom Barasso for most shutouts in Penguin team history.
Nice win from the Predators tonight. I miss having Hal Gill on the Pens.
I was excited for the Battle of Alberta, but it turned into a yawner. I like Kirpusoff, so it was tough to see him get lit up like that.

Detroit got Quincy, and from what I've heard he's gritty and has good puck moving skills.
Most of those I've talked to consider Quincy a top 3 or 4 defenseman for most teams. In Detroit he'll be a five. But keep in mind he'a a lot younger than Stuart or Lidstrom. So he makes the blue line younger too. As far as putting him on waivers, with the cap Detroit has had to put a lot of decent young talent on waivers in the last few years. This is one of the penalties for having great scouting, and player development.
The thing to watch during the deadline for Detroit is that Detroit has one large contract (5.5m per season) worth of cap space. To me the question is do they go after Rick Nash, or wait till the off season and go after a top defenseman?
Never mind, I got it wrong. Heard out here that Detroit got Downie which made no sense and then that Detroit got upgraded on D. Gotta quit listening to Smilovitz.
I was there. Jets pretty much got worked from start to finish, Pavelec came this close to stealing that one. When he made that glove save in the third, the whole place went nuts.
They replayed that glove save a few times. My wife and I both thought that was in on the big screen until they replayed it. (Why wasn't it in HD???) Pavelec was definitely on last night or that would have been 10-4 blowout! Couldn't believe that guy.
I did love how loud that place was. That's how the arenas should be when hockey is played. They have a great crowd and arena there in Winnipeg. Shame they had to do without so many years.

What's really great about these fans is they also cheer (loudly) for the subtle things that have a big impact on the game. A guy makes a quick move with his stick to keep the puck in the zone gets a huge cheer. Things like that. There are 15 thousand knowledgable hockey fans getting excited about things that never make headlines but go a long way towards winning the game. That has to be great for a hockey player.
I agree. There are very few places that get THAT loud (loud enough to interfere with a tv broadcast), pretty impressive to see.
It's incredible, what's going on in Washington. I've never seen 20-odd people wearing the same jersey play so poorly (and yes, that includes the Pittsburgh Pirates). I don't even know what I want anymore... give Dale Hunter the offseason to work with the GM to retool? Let the players sit and sulk for a few months, and put the onus on them to come back with some semblance of hunger? Blow up the team and start anew?
Patience my friend. This funk will not last, and there is time to turn it around. All it takes is a couple guys to spark the turnaround, and there is no shortage of guys on that roster who can step up.

I watched the game, and it was in HD. I have DirecTV. Is that what you have, or do you have cable? I did notice that tomorrow night's game is NOT offered in HD on my DirecTV Center Ice package. The Flyers seem to be one of the few teams that aren't always available in HD.
The game itself was a nail-biter. Back and forth all night, although I felt the Flyers outplayed them the entire game. The difference? As usual, it was goaltending. Pavelec was friggin' awesome, while Bryzgalov was South of average. But other than the goaltending, the Flyers deserved those 2 points. Sent it to OT with 9 or 10 seconds left in regulation. Then Jagr wins it with 44 seconds left in OT. SOOOOO glad it didn't go to a shootout!!
