I agree with all that. G is most effective when he plays with an edge and I think that's hard to come by in Foppaian players. It would seem that he has a certain respect for the game and opposing players as well. No cheap shots and he is willing to take his lumps as well. He is the hard worker and team first attitude that Richards era teams were lacking.

The thing I never really cared for was the Richards/Crosby feud. Sure it's entertaining but it's a double edged sword. Get caught up in crap like that and it takes your focus off the game. G doesn't really get caught up in that. He takes it game by game and keeps the games within the games.

I feel like he has handled the pressures admirably,...but I'm worried that giving him the Captaincy may be too much too soon. I think he has the leadership qualities. I'm not sure who it would go to if Pronger is done (which I think is a certainty). Timonen maybe?

I wish JVR could have come along for the ride as well this season but he is playing 3rd fiddle to Harts and Giroux (man I'm digging on Hartnell a lot more than seasons past). Methinks Homer is gonna have a tough decision with Reemer in the off season. He seemingly has a high enough trade value that the Flyers could afford to bump up the D if they so desired.

So Mike,

I know you have moved to the east coast,...but what do think of the potential new arena in Seattle and the market potentially supporting an NHL team?

They've changed there tune over there since letting the Sonics walk. Can they make it happen? Can the market support it along with the other 3 major sports (by which I mean also a potential NBA team, the Mariners and the Sounders :D)?

I don't think the NHL will make it in Seattle long term. There is so-so support for the minor league teams in Everett and Seattle (Kent really). If it does, I'll be mad since I lived there all those years with having to drive to Vancouver (four hours one way) for a game. :)

The arena is great, and I'll be happy for Sonics fans to get their team back, but I think it will be bittersweet. It was sad living there watching the Sonics leave town. So now Seattle will have to be the ones stealing another citys NHL or NBA team if they want one.

Oh here we go.

I'm glad you guys are passionate about your teams,...but blaming teams for something that fans have done in the past is kinda dumb.

The fans are probably my least favorite aspect of sports. See Vancouver riots,....see Montreal riots,...see Flyers fans beating up a Rags fan after the WC. Make the argument that these aren't real fans but for some reason people stop being level headed (maybe mixed in with some alcohol and a bit of a jock mentality) when it comes into the passion they have for their teams.

EDIT: Ah,...I see BSB is keeping it level headed and jovial.

I've just learned to be more cerebral about the game and not get frustrated in adversity. This year has been a test for sure. ;)

For the record....I found a Flyers fan (guy is originally from Philly area) here at work. Nice, friendly, classy guy all around. He wears his Flyer beanie to work, I wear my Pens. We get along great. The Bruin fans have been the obnoxious ones here so far.

Well,...it would be nice to see it happen. I'd definitely be willing to make the trip over there to see a Flyers game in Seattle.

One day I'll make to the Wells Fargo/Wachovia/First Union whatever it will be called in the future arena for a Flyers home game. With my Grandmother getting up there in age I could see me being in the area for an extended period of time.

I bounced at PSU for the 5 years I was there for school. 80% of the fights I ended up getting into were dude bros from Philly ;) All the Flyers fans in this thread are pretty nice though! I used to really, really hate the Flyers. Still hate Pronger. But it's hard to hate guys like Giroux, Bryzgalov, Jagr, and recently even Hartnell from watching 24/7. Flyers are a fun team to watch for sure.

I think every real hockey fan agrees with you. We are just talking smack. My best friend, that I played hockey with my whole life is a pens fan and my brother and uncle live there. I really hope everyone knows I'm screwing around. I respect no other team as much, but I hate no other team as much.

Exactly. Although I can't think if one penguin I like. I like Max Talbot, and Jagr does that count?

D'awww.

I just really wish my Flyers carried a bit of a better reputation. So much Flyer's hate. I used to visit the Flyers FB often but the amount of vitriol spewed by both Flyer's fans and haters alike was a big turn off for me.

Oh and don't get me started on YouTube comments section. So many Armchair Referees and just the most hateful and inflammatory rhetoric. I can't be bothered with that stuff and would really rather focus on the games and look at things objectively.

Note my edit: Smack talking is one thing,...just hard to convey in the written text,...and I've honestly been absent from TB for a while that we haven't really had the opportunity to get to internet know one another. :D

Matt Cooke has actually changed his game a lot. Not that I've been following that developement but it would seem as though he has calmed down the temper,...stopped taking dumb penalties and cheap shots at players. He's making an effort to take the dirty aspect out of his game and I have to give him a lot of credit for that.

Same goes for Steve Downie albeit to a lesser extent I think.

Cooke has done a tremendous job this year. He said he would change his game and he did. He's not as effective in terms of a hard hitter but he has turned that energy into being a great grinder, PK'er and has buried the puck in the net when the Pens have needed it this year.

Unfortunately that doesn't change his reputation or his previous illegal hits. I honestly don't think he's a bad guy, just played too far over the edge. It's kind of like Ndamukong Suh.
