Official 2011-2012 NHL Regular Season Thread; Second Period

Because Keith's elbow was in retaliation to the elbow that Sedin sent him to the locker room with earlier in the game. Sedin went in high, hard, and way late on Kieth, and Kieth caught him with a little payback later in the game. I honestly feel like Kieth's suspension was a little hefty and based more on who he hit rather than his actions.

I'll have to check out the two plays before I come to any conclusions if it was deserved or not.

Good game in Vancouver so far. Quick gave up a goal already, but has settled in nicely. Luongo has looked good although the Canucks defense and forecheck is keeping LA from setting up anything consistent offensively. I sure miss Rob Scuderi though.

Today is the 15th anniversary of the greatest regular season game in NHL History. On 3/26/97 the Detroit Red Wings beat the Colorado Avalanche 6-5 in OT and Darren McCarthy beat the crap out of a whinny little cheap-shot artist Claude Lemieux as Mike Vernon did the same to Patrick WAH!!!:D

And the current Wings seem to be getting well in time for the playoffs as they smoked the Blue-Jackets 7-1 tonight and clinched their 21st straight playoff berth, the longest streak in any major sport.

7-2 Burk. :)

Why was that the greatest game in NHL regular season history?

Did you see the pass from Z on the Holmstrom goal? As sweet as the Crosby spin pass to Cooke in the loss to Ottawa the other night.

I saw the highlights and yes it was sweet.

Why, Because the Wings smoked the Avs, and went on to win two straight cups. The intensity was a great as any playoff game I've seen including the seventh games of the Pens-wings series. Those teams really hated each other.

I'm not saying that the hits were equal in severity or that Kieth didn't deserve the suspension. What I am saying is that Sedin deserved a little payback after his headshot to Kieth was a no-call. This is honestly one of the few times I'd be okay with Kieth missing as much time as Sedin, because I feel like the missed call was terrible equaled only by the dirty play by Kieth.

I don't like Chicago or Vancouver either one, so with Sedin out and Keith suspended, it just makes our road to the Cup a little easier.

Edit: Dang, Columbus looked even worse than usual.

Totally disagree. I saw the one Sedin hit on Keith in the Hawks' defensive zone after Keith had cleared the puck; I thought Sedin was just finishing his check after Keith played it. I did see his elbow come up a bit, but I thought it was as much due to him raising his shoulder to protect his head as opposed to trying to get his elbow up into Keith.

Keith's elbow, on the other hand, was a charging, elbow-up-and-out move on a totally unsuspecting Sedin when neither the play nor the puck were anywhere near them. In my opinion, a true cheap shot. Sedin's hit on Keith was, at worst, a borderline penalty situation, whereas Keith's was an obvious immediate suspension.

I did not see the supposed elbow Sedin put on Keith, but I did see the elbow Keith put on Sedin. I'm a Pens fan so I'm pretty unbiased towards those two teams, and what Keith did has no place in the league. I'm surprised he didn't get a Matt Cooke suspension for what he did. He was 100% attempting to cause a head injury to Sedin. I don't care if Sedin slept with his girlfriend, this is exactly what the league is trying to crack down on. Take your retribution by lining up a clean hard hit. Now we have another superstar out with a head injury.

I will reiterate my opinion on suspensions for blatant attempt to injure hits. The player should be suspended for as long as the other player is injured, PLUS what ever the hit warrants. In Keith's case, he should be out as long as Sedin, PLUS five games. The forfeited pay should also go to the injured player.

No good. Say, if Sedin was having head problems before the elbow & then the injury was aggravated by Keith & Sedin was out for a whole season, are you going to suspend Keith for a whole season?

Yep, he is the straw that broke the camels back. Sedin wouldn't be out unless Keith hit him. It might seem harsh, but if Sedin can't work, the guy that hit him should be able to either. It would be a very large deterrent for that kind of action. I am also of the opinion that the guys on the Saints that were running the bounty system should be facing criminal charges, it is assault. Just because you are playing a sport, doesn't give you the ability to not be charged for hurting someone. If I elbowed a random person as I walked down the street, I would get charged. I see no reason why it shouldn't be the same for actions that happen on the ice.

The fact that Keith's elbow was a deliberate retaliation, IMO, is a fact that argues in favor of the suspension, not against it.

[can of worms]

Get rid of the enforcer rule and there would be a lot less of this stuff to worry about.

[/can of worms]

I like warwick.hoy's idea from last year....the roster spot can't be filled during the suspension.

-Mike

Add that to my suspension idea and you have almost zero of that kind of thing happening in the league. IMO, attempt to injure is paramount to assault and could be considered attempted murder. I still think that Todd Bertuzzi should have spent time in jail and never set foot on an NHL rink again.

It doesn't "seem" harsh, it is harsh. If a player has a pre-existing injury, you can't hold the latest infraction accountable for the entire situation because he is the "straw that broke the camel's back". That's nonsense.

You can't body check someone on the street either. Should we charge players for that too?
