Official 2011-2012 NHL Regular Season Thread; Second Period

I wish nothing but the best to Max and Jaromir. Both did great things as a member of the Pens. I was hoping Jagr was going to sign with the Pens this past offseason, but I understand why he was concerned about playing time with the Pens. I sure don't fault him for wanting to play max minutes and get max money in a contract.

Talbot...eh, no biggie when he walked. Good guy, but easy to replace.

If the Flyers beat out the Pens in the first round, I'll be supporting the Flyers to win the SC.

-Mike

I agree with all of this, except the part about cheering for the Flyers haha. It is part of the business. People change teams and you move on. I would have loved to have seen Jagr in a Pens jersey again, but we obviously have been ok without both him and Talbot. Any Pens fan that hates Talbot is a joke. He was a big part in winning our cup, and he called Ovechkin a douche.

Of course I don't cheer for him now that he is a Flyer ;)

Since I'm out here in Denver, I went to the Avalanche game and watched them end their postseason hopes by losing to the Blue Jackets 5-2.

But more importantly, the Caps locked up a playoff berth by beating the Panthers and getting an assist from Philly when they beat Buffalo. If the Caps win against the Rangers on Saturday, they can move to seventh if Ottawa loses, or they can actually win the division if Florida loses.

Torts a whiner. Talk about coaches with skirts. He and Lav should go on a date.

Orpik's knee didn't look intentional. Stepan tried to jump out of the way at the last second. They gave Orpik a 5 minute major and a game misconduct. What else does he want? He is an idiot.

Basically power plays were 6 to 2 in favor of the Rangers and they still got their asses kicked on the scoreboard. Torts always whines about something when he loses.

Tough spot for Orpik. I don't think it was intentional either, he guessed on the play and he was wrong. Maybe he should have been more careful. You can end a guys career with one of those hits. I understand why the Rangers were mad, but come on Tortorella, stop your crying.

Game over for the Stars. Too bad. I like those guys.

I agree with this view. Didn't seem like he overly stuck out his knee, but he certainly didn't try to stop it.. those split second plays are tough to avoid.

As a Rangers fan, I am just going to hope Stepan is fine and put it behind me. Torts was clearly furious, but the fact that we lost to the Pens again didn't help. His comments about them whining (IMO) are true in many regards, but it doesn't justify us acting that way.

My eyes are still on Vancouver for that President's Trophy. We have the tie breaker, so a win against the Caps will clinch it for us. Given the Rangers past playoff experience against the Caps in recent years, can't say I necessarily want to play them, but a victory against them ensures that. If the Caps did win, and Ottawa lost in regulation, Washington moves into the #7 spot.

Stepan was on the bench smiling 3 minutes after the hit so I'd imagine he's OK. Orpik deserved the 5 min and misconduct but shouldn't be suspended.

The hit wasn't that different from the one Rupp made with Staal that made him miss a third of the season. Never heard Bylsma whine about that one.

Hope Stepan is fine. Never like to see a player hurt. Seems the contact was to his thigh so hopefully he's just got a bruise.

Going of the 24/7 insight,.....I'd much rather be coached by Laviolette than Tortillarella.

Laviolette seemingly commands the respect of his players by being respectful. Not saying that he doesn't lose control but Torts is way more hot headed. I'd be constantly worried about getting screamed at by the guy if I make a mistake. I guess if you are pro athlete that sorta thing comes with the territory.

After the embarrassment at the hands of the Rangers on Tuesday; I'm glad to see the Flyers bear down on the Sabres and get the W. That was a really defensive and entertaining game,...no room to work with and came down to who could best cash in on their few and far between chances. Getting Bryz into a rhythm is going to be key for the Flyers.

1000+ posts in the regular season - 2nd period. Just in time for a Stanley Cup thread to open up.

This is a great thread.

Indeed. Consider too it's a relatively small group of us posting. The NHL threads here are a highlight of the season for me. I usually can't wait to get back in here after the nights games to see what you guys all have to say.

-Mike

I won't overly defend Tortorella, but I will say that in a situation like what happened last night, I can't blame him for sticking up for one of his players. It's a tough time of year and an injury is the last thing we'd want

The league decided today that their not disciplining Orpik, so the hit was obviously not bad enough to warrant any suspension, but it certainly had the potential to be worse in many ways. I think that is what set Torts off. So even though he overreacted and caused an embarrassing scene, maybe better to make a fuss than not address a hit on his player and write it off.

In the end I wonder if he is just keeping the focus off his players and trying to fire them up for the playoffs. It is probably a pretty successful strategy at the price of making a mockery of yourself.

We're obviously both biased, but while trying to remain objective here, I think Torts is just a big hot head with a loud mouth, and he was caught for an interview at a time when he probably should not have been talking to anyone.

I don't think he'll necessarily apologize, but I wouldn't be surprised if he regrets some of the comments he made, especially about Crosby and Malkin. I may not like Crosby and I think he has committed many dirty plays, but their of those two did anything wrong that game. No need to throw them under the bus. To be honest, Torts has been pretty good all season with the media and not getting too riled up. Maybe it's because we've been winning, but he has been better.

I don't see the Rangers/Torts holding a grudge (at least not publicly), and I think they'll move on right away. Lundqvist should be back next game if his arm heals up, and Stepan, while sore and not skating today, seems like he is okay.

Since I am not in the lines of communication with Pens media, did Orpik say anything about it after the game? You're right about this being reminiscent of the Stall/Rupp collision, but I remember Rupp saying afterwards it was unintentional and that he hopes Staal was okay.

All pro sports need some kind of post game window of 30-45 minutes where no player or coach can be interviewed just so everyone can decompress. I don't like how reporters shove a microphone in the face of a coach or player as they are leaving the field/ice.

It's even worse in football when they do it at halftime, then coming back on the field after halftime.....

Reporter: Coach, your team is down 28 points and your best player is out of the game with an injury. What did you say to the team in the locker room?

No room for that in my opinion.
