OFFICIAL ASHDOWN CLUB

Ampeg tube head (three of them) guy here. I took an old Mag 300 on trade once years ago. Didn't need it but was able to sell another head that way. I found I actually liked it and was impressed how warm it was for a SS head. Eventually sold it but always wished I had kept it.

Ran across a decent deal IMO on a used RM 300 EVOii and hope to satisfy my Ashdown desires. Seems to be a handy little head that I hope has that nice Ashdown tone. I'll use it for a change of flavor and quick backup just in case, and for when I don't want to fire the tubes up. Headphone out might be nice as well. Really looking forward to it arriving later this week. I'm kind of shocked they stopped making them and moved to the smaller "Original." I'm glad I found one of these.

They stopped making rootmasters?

Go big or go home. Just bit the bullet and placed my order for an ABM-EVO V 750. I first verified with Ashdown that a Sweetwater customer review issue with the valve drive on one unit had been resolved. It had and they've been making this preamp for a long time, so I'm trusting this will be solid. I have a couple fine Class D amps which aren't going anywhere but the preamp features, tone, and headroom from this beast should be fun.

The drive knob has a bit of a learning curve and different basses will react very different to the harmonics. Most often I leave the EQ off and just use the input and drive knobs.

Very brief and initial impressions.
LOUD! I've seen people lament that 300w of class D is questionable for having enough volume. They must be playing through one 3" driver at 40Ohms (can that even be a thing?). Running it through the above 212 4Ohm cab, this sucker is loud. If that won't cut it for most gigs, I can't help but suspect something is wrong with that band's idea of playing together. Not to mention it's got what is said to be a nice DI. I'll give that a go before long. I'm running this thing barely on for just playing in the house without bothering others. Possibly as it's turned up (something I haven't done) the volume fizzles or gets funky, but so far I'm not perceiving any volume issues.

It sounds really good at home. Has the crispness of SS amps, but can easily be toned down and be warm, which is what I'm used to hearing. That cab seems a good match. Possibly because Ashdown uses Eminence speakers (made in Ky;)). And I read (some of?) their cabs are made just across the Ohio river around Cinci. I'm definitely going to take it to church and use it with with my Ampeg Heritage 410 for kicks.

Compressor seems pretty nice and useful--and I've always liked the Sub-Harmonic generator as a cool feature once in a while. Nice, light and easy to get a good sound. More time with it well shed more light, but so far I'm happy. Perfect for a different amp flavor and for an easy backup if ever necessary. Ashdown's push buttons always seem a little cheap, but no biggie as long as they work.

Congrats!! Ashdown are definitely one of the few who don't seem to inflate thier power numbers. Other companies will say 300watts peak, Ashdown seems more like 300 rms
Got me thinking I should keep an eye out for another one.

Indeed. I've had an Ampeg 3Pro and an SWR head that were rated around 300 or above, but so far were not anywhere near as loud. The Ampeg in the pic is rated 100w but is a really loud 100w!

And yes you should. Never hurts to have something handy if had at a good price.

And thanks for your input about this head!

Great looking amp! On another note, how do you like that Lekato wireless unit? Seen them on Amazon for dirt cheap with totally mixed reviews (like you can really trust Amazon reviews anyway).

Thank you! They work fine for my purposes. I didn't want to spend much and I got them to use mainly at home to avoid fooling with cables. I've used them live and had no problem with mine. I never got more than ~30ft, but didn't notice any latency or other issues. They have never picked up any noise. I would have no problem using them in a rehearsal space or live. I know you can spend more and others are likely better (some have tuners), but this does wireless, which is why I bought them. If I were gigging a lot and getting paid, I would likely go for something more expensive in hopes it may not cause a problem for the paying customer. But I have no problem with these--so far. Approaching 2 years I think.

I'm noticing a white noise/hiss with my used RM 300 Evo ii. It's not loud, but definitely noticeable if nothing is going on. Not enough of a problem I want to take it back to GC, but I don't know if this is an indication of something going bad or not. I've used it in two locations in the house with different cabs and it's the same. Kind of took me be surprise as my tube heads are dead silent. Nothing to worry about, common or a concern?

I cancelled my order from Sweetwater, which wasn't due until mid-June, to buy a mint ABM 600 Shavo22 model from the TB classifieds. It sounds just like I hoped it would - huge, warm, and crisp with plenty of headroom. It hits hard and provides a nice tactile feel the way it handles those cones. The Ashdown pre-shape EQ selection provides a good starting point and I think the valve drive will always be on at some level. I tried it first with my DIY 3+1 410 cab which is voiced fairly deep and I couldn't believe how solid and even deeper the tone was. There was still plenty of midrange to work with and the tube adds a nice harmonic texture. Next, I hooked it up to my GK NeoIV 212 which is punchy, a bit mid-forward, and loud. Bumping the bass and adding a little sub-harmonic generator seemed to widen the tone and bring up the low end nicely. With passive input at 1:00 and master at 10:30 this thing just roared. I didn't keep it at this level for long and annoy the neighbors, but I'm sure this would be plenty for any of my gigs. Nice head! Only 23 lbs and the slightly smaller size, vs ABM 600 or 750 with wooden case, fits on my cabinets better.

Solid score, looks great!

Never quite understood why some people say the abm/Ashdown heads are all vintage voiced baked in, unable to do modern tones...

I've never had a problem.
It's because they have a low mid bump, and the high end is shelved off. But, either taking away from the low mids, or simply pushing the shape button takes care of that.

Anyone using an rm800?

I'm having a problem with the limiter on the input. I this green light comes on, and squashes my signal. It's not too bad through a speaker. But, it's really bad out the DI. You can also hear it in the tweeter. But, it's the DI signal that's blatantly apparent.

It's coming on at - 10ish on the VU. Nowhere near clipping. And, if I just kill the gain enough to stop it, then my signal's too weak to use out the DI.

Is anyone else having this issue?
