It's because they have a low mid bump, and the high end is shelved off. But, either taking away from the low mids, or simply pushing the shape button takes care of that.

Yeah exactly, that's why I've always been confused when people say that. :smug: I always looked at the pre shape as an instant modern tone button.

Or the VU might not be working right? Among any other problem of course.

Never used the rm, does it have the pre/post EQ DI button could it be that? I know if I send post EQ from mine to FOH they say they have a real hard time dealing with the signal.

No, I guess they have some limiter on the input section. But, it's coming on stupid early. Like, they set the threshold too low. Check it out.

That seems off. The RM300 I had didn't kick in that early. I think i had to have it past noon-1 o'clock for it to come in with a heavy picking

The knob position of the Input gain control is not really informative. If your bass has a hot output, you need less gain to tickle the input. If your bass has a weak output, you need to crank the gain more.

@JeezyMcNuggles

The VU should be informative, but in my experience Ashdown VUs are not necessarily consistently calibrated from one amp to the next.

From RM 800 OM:
The compression level control adjusts the degree of compression applied
to the bass signal. For this to function correctly the input level must be
correctly set as described in the input control section above. When the
input level is correctly set there will be hardly any difference in volume
between compression in and compression out. This is because the
RM automatically compensates for the reduction in level that would be
apparent when compression is added by increasing the overall gain to
restore the volume to its pre compression level, because of this you may
notice an increase in background noise with high compression settings.
Compression is switched in/out with the push button adjacent to the
compression level control.

This suggest the threshold for the compressor is fixed, but placed after the Input gain control and EQ controls. So you push the signal up to the compression threshold by adjusting the Input gain. The Compression knob is apparently a ratio control, so you can vary the amount of compression that occurs after the signal hits the threshold. The Compression can be turned off with the Comp In/Out switch.

From the OM:
Input control
The input control sets the signal level through the preamp in conjunction
with the input level vu meter. This is adjusted to give a reading of 0vu on
the meter for average playing dynamics with occasional peaks into the
red region. Please note that the setting of this may have to be re-adjusted
after modification of the E.Q. controls.

If the compressor is kicking in before the signal approaches 0vu, my guess is the compressor threshold calibration is set too low. This may be set with an internal adjustment, or it may be indicative of a faulty circuit.

Contact Ashdown technical support is the right answer IMHO. You may not be able to email them directly, as last time I interacted with them they had to add me to their SPAM filter to communicate back and forth. I reached them through the technical service portal, and it took a few days before someone from technical support reached back to me.

@Wasnex tracking all, my point was that it wasn't hyper sensitive like what he's experiencing. I had to give it a lot to get it to kick in and I generally use very hot Nordstrands and high gain dirty preamps. I'm sure he'll be sorted out, I love Ashdown and they've been very responsive for me through Facebook and IG if email doesn't yield results.

It's not the compressor. It's a limiter on the input. The problem is that if I turn the gain down enough to not cause it to come on, my signal is too weak to use.

Email Dave Green ([email protected]) and Guy Morel ([email protected]). They are incredibly helpful and accommodating. I've been to the Ashdown HQ and I was made to feel like an old friend.
Dave never gets back to me. I get one message from him, then nothing. I have a pedal waiting on an output pot at my tech. It's been over a month since he said he'd send one. Got a hit back last week asking what it was for again.

I've also been waiting 9 months for a replacement 10. I gave up a good while ago.

Dave said to exchange the amp. I bought it off their website, and asked what I can do. He said he's going to look into it. He hasn't got back to me...again. That's why I'm asking around to see if anyone else is having the same issue with the input limiter.

Frankly, I'm getting kinda tired of it all.

Yes. I also tried unsuccessfully to find a schematic, so I could postulate.

Looks like it needs to be tickled by Ashdown authorized.
Yup. I really thought hard about opening it up, and trying to bypass it. But, I'm ultimately just gonna return it. Just gotta wait til Dave gets back to me about it. I'm hoping Monday. But, we'll see. I have to get the return authorized before the 10th though.

Sucks too. Problems aside, the amp is pretty awesome. Just, not this one.

Mark is generally who responds on FB... I would try and reach them through there and see if it speeds things up.

I've had my CTM-100 for 5 days now and I'm absolutely loving it. Don't think I can go back to non tube, and I haven't even opened it right up yet. Will get to do that at rehearsal next Saturday.
My only complaint is that the badge has not been screwed on straight. That annoys me a little haha.

Now that most unusual. I've emailed them many times. I've shipped a head for servicing (they shipped it back at their cost). I've saught advice.
Always helpful. Very unusual....
