who here strings through the body vs at the bridge?

i just switched mine to through the body-
i timed the sustain on my open e...it was like 40 seconds, at least 25 of which were decently loud. dude.
i did a cursory setup- i moved around the bridge saddles, tuned, just changed strings. i think i should probably get my truss rod adjusted a bit...it feels slightly bowed. not enough to impact my playing, since i play super hard on it anyway. i have all this leftover forearm strength from years of upright playing...

the sound does feel a bit smoothed out to me, and honestly i can't think of a time when i would want to hold a note for that long, but it's still awesome.

so which do you guys use?

I string through the body, more strings, more tension, especially as I have my whole set downtuned two semitones. I would recommend using the body instead of the bridge, as you get more vibrations with more strings attached to the body of a bass.

I go through body too, the whole sustain thing does matter even if your not holding a note that long, a bass with more sustain always sounds more powerful to me. Helps the thing sound a little deeper too, which I prefer cos I play with a pick alot of the time, there's a fair amount less pick noise too when strung through too if you ask me. Just overall sounds punchier, more defined and resonant, and less noisy. I liked the sound before I ever tried it, but now I use the body stringing it just sounds a bit weak and thin for me in comparison. Could only imagine me ever using it for slap, but I can't, and probably will never do, proper slap playing.

Gave the bass a whole new sound, pain in the balls finding strings long enough though.

Really? Every set Ive put on fits just fine. My main set is Dean Markley SR2000s though :D

Mine bloody haven't! Ernies don't fit, D'Addario don't, the random cheap but awesome strings my local music shop sells don't (they don't do 110s though so that doesn't matter too much) and Rotos don't fit either...

Pretty much every set of Nickle 110s I've not had any luck with, gone to the extent of taking one of those bloody string ferret things (whatever they're called) off on my E so it'll reach my nut properly.

Here is mine new ATK 305, made in Japan '96.

BTW i'm a bit disappointed how this bass sits in the mix, my previous bass BTB 555 had much more growl, i've got to spend some more time with EQ and buy better strings :)

If you want more growl perhaps look into one of these;

you can get them from; http://www.bassculture.de/ although the ATK purists will shun you for having one! :p

Nice ATK though, exactly the same as mine but a 5er, you didn't happen to get it from some German guy on Ebay did you? Cos I saw a 5er exactly the same as my 4 (same finish, Japanese made in 1996) when I bought mine from his Ebay shop all those years ago.

Hmm, well Ive never used nickel sets, only stainless steel. so maybe thats the ticket? haha I dunno, I dont have an option though, I have to string through the body, I guess the older models didnt have both. that stinks though :(

If he was selling this ATK in april this year, this could be the one you are talking about, but i've bought it from another polish bassplayer, who bought it in april, but don't from who;) Sorry for my grammar:)

I don't like the idea to change the pickup, i'd prefer to change bass for a spector euro, but right now this ATK is a great bass, maybe in 2009 i'll think about change.

...maybe but T-40 does not have the super-big bridge with the tri-part pickup which is IMHO the neat thing with ATK including the body weight.

Oh I'm not saying the bridge/pup design is thanks to the T-40. I think the over all feel and look of it is like a natural evolution of the T-40. If only Peavey would have been smart enough to keep it around and evolve it!

Ah right, I thought you meant that you took that picture when you first got it :p Nevermind, you speak English much better then I can manage any other language.

That pickup is really worthwhile though it still sounds like an ATK, just picks up different parts of it's unplugged sound. It's only 80 euros. I was getting pretty unhappy with my ATK, but the new pickup gave it alot of new life.

Hey, your ATK can't be any older than mine and I have the option of not going through-body.....here's a pic to show you how it's done:

Only my E is top-loaded, because I too have issues finding a long enough set. Carvin sell ferrules that are longer than Ibanez (or Fender) ferrules, and that would fix it, but I've been too lazy to order a set.

OOOOO wow I never thought of that. I was thinking through the bridge as in the end of it like traditional basses. My sets have always made it all the way through, but now I know. Thanks man. thats like the first day (6 months after I had it) I found out my volume was a push pull that boosted the Semour duncan preamp some...I was kicking myself for that one >_<

Heh, that reminds me of the time my friend showed me his Alvarez acoustic. He was proud because it was an anniversary model, and was a lefty. I could see it had been converted to lefty; the bridge had been altered and the side dots were on the wrong side. He had never noticed! Anyway, to get off the subject, I asked him how it sounded plugged it. He just stared at me and asked "You can plug it in?". :D

yeah i definitely have been digging stringing through the body- i can't believe i waited so long!:hiding:

it fattens up the tone quite a bit (i find i dont need to EQ up the bass anymore), and the added string tension is nice. i'm using DR Lo riders (SS) and they are more than long enough.
