Why not go for the Four 10? It is still very easy to move and should cover most bigger gigs without a problem.
I am not really keen on the form factor of a 410. If the 210 does not have enough output and the big twin 2 is too modern then I would either go for 2 x 210 stacked vertical or just use the 210 for smaller gigs and keep the Berg 412 for when it is not enough.

So my choice is 1 x 4 ohm 210 if it is loud enough, big twin 2 if I can get a retro sound from it, or 2 x 12 ohm 210 if I need more output than the 210.

So my question to those that have tried them is:

Can you get a good vintage tone from the big twin?

Does the 210 have as much output as say a Berg ht/ex stack?

Good questions. I too will be interested in any responses.

Can't compare it to the Berg. No experience.

The Twin could get you the vintage sound depending on what you feed it. If you're relying on your cab to get the majority of your sound, then the fit might not be right for you if your bass and amp won't eq the difference. The Twin will reproduce what you feed it. Punch a BBBOD or similar pedal in the chain and you can get nice vintage sounds.

The volume output difference between the Two10 and the Twin is probably going to be noticeable. I find a Two10 sufficient for my needs, but YMMV.

Got my Four10 a few days ago, and I've been playing it at home, comparing to my other cabinets with different basses. I won't make any comments yet.

I made some quick and dirty 8-bar recordings using fingers, slap, and pick with the following cabs:
- Greenboy Dually w/3015's
- fEARful 12/6/1 (home-built)
- BareFaced Four10
- Ampeg SVT212AV

Not great recording or playing, but I think you can get some idea of the differences from them.
3 techniques, 4 speakers, so 12 snippets in all.

Two questions:
1) Should I upload them anonymously and let y'all guess, or label them?
2) 12 separate files? 3 files (one per technique)? 4 files (one per cabinet)?

2 Two10's would cost $1698, whereas a Four10 would be $1262, so there's that. But, I understand the modularity argument and ability to go vertical. Definitely valid points. The BB2 is 28" which is only 4 inches taller than the Four10, and a Big Twin is 9 1/2" taller than a Four10. So, if height off the floor is an issue, a BT gets you less than 10" additional inches, but that's not nothing. The two Two10 stack would get you a little more height than either of the former though.

Comparing the tone of the 12" drivers/cabs and a Four10, I don't think you'll get an inherently vintage-y tone like you would from a Two10 or a Four10, but as noted by monster, it depends on if you are putting IN a "vintage" sound. Personally, and speaking for no one else, I'd rather carry a Four10 than a 412 to gigs when I want big sound; the form factor of 4 12's would be undesirable for me. The 12" drivers (BT, ST, BB2, SM, SC) all sound good though, just in a different, more uncolored way.

1) ~Whatever~ I could probably identify the fEarful, the others probably not - though, I'd think the Four10 would be the punchiest sounding one in the mid-bass to low-mids.

Im asking myself the exact same questions.

I like the guessing game.

OK, here's the recordings.

There are four MP3 (Yeah yeah I know) files, each a recording of one of the following speaker cabinets:
- Greenboy Dually w/3015's
- fEARful 12/6/1 cube (home-built, true 3-way crossover)
- BareFaced Four10
- Ampeg SVT212AV (tweeter off)

Each file has bass+drums (more bass) in the left channel, and bass soloed in the right channel, so you can hear it in different contexts by panning.

The amplifier used was a Kustom KXB500 (a pretty neutral amp), set with all eq at noon.

The mic used was a Studio Projects C1, a cheap but decent large diaphragm condenser. I put it basically at the center of one cone, about 2 inches from the grill.

I did my best to mic each speaker so it sounded the way it does in the room. I used the top left cone (full-range) in the Four10. The hard one was the fEARful. I tried to put the mic between the woofer and midrange driver, but on at least one take I got too close to the mid and thus recorded more snarl and less bottom than a true representation.

There are three snippets in each file:
Fingerstyle - Nordy VP5 w/Lull Duncan pickup, Cobalt rounds
Slap - Moollon Vintage J5, both vols and tone maxed, Cobalt rounds
Pick - Nordy VP5

Forgive my slapping, I haven't done it since the 80's...

No processing was done to the recordings, except to adjust the clip volumes to match as well as I could.

I hope you get something out of this. I certainly learned a bit about my cabs and my ears.
Let me know what you think... I'll reveal the identities, I dunno, Thursday afternoon? Ish?

Thanks for doing this. From a quick listen I like 2 and 3 the best.

I stil have moments of temptation to get two SM cabs and sell off my BB2 to finance that. However, I'm pretty sufficiently outfitted.

Do it! Do it! (Evil laugh): Mwah-hah-hah!!

Seriously, I've used my SM stack a total of one time and it was very, very nice. Man, those little cabs put out some BIG sound! I played an outdoor-under-a-big-tent gig last weekend on a decent sized stage with decent FOH PA. Just used one SM sitting on my little gig/cord back tilted back monitor style. More than enough.

My cab GAS is cured. The SM is perfect for me. Small enough for the small gigs (cocktail hour jazz duo/trio stuff) and "big" enough to monitor myself for larger shows. Clean, accurate tone that responds to EQ well. What's not to like?

Thank you. Seems like it is a bit of a forgotten cab since it's kind of a BB2 Junior. The BB2, SC, (or Big/Super Twin) and Two10 are the most common choices. I don't know but somehow I bet the SM is a good DB cab as well.

I use the SM for upright and love it. BUT, I'm primarily an electric player. BUT, I do gig on upright ("cocktail hour jazz", some Americana type stuff) and think it sounds fantastic. The low end is big but controllable. EQ adjustments are heard immediately. Projects like a motha.

Cool, thanks for the time and effort. At first blush, I greatly preferred Cab #2 in every way, then #1. The last two seemed more old school, which is just not my thing at all.

Has anyone compared the BF Super Midget or Super Compact to a Bergantino HDN210? I have the Berg, it is a great cabinet but the almost 10pound weight reduction of either BF cab is very attractive, assuming either is pretty close in overall performance.
